Parents Guide The Fall Guy Movie Review | Safe for Kids?
Lights, camera, ACTION! You think you have a hard day on the job? Try being a stuntman.
Stunt guys really don’t get enough credit. Some of the best films in entertainment history were made possible by people strong courageous and perhaps crazy enough to perform stunts that seem impossible. Written as a love letter to the hard-working action thriller film crews who often go under the radar as the unsung heroes and an ode to his old stuntman days director David Leitch (“Deadpool 2“) is reaching for the pinnacle appreciation of action movies everywhere.
But is his love letter about to bomb or have an explosive chain reaction?
In The Fall Guy Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full TV-14 age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in this new 2024 The Fall Guy parents guide to the new Universal Pictures action comedy. A no-spoiler parent review of The Fall Guy 2024, is the audience in for an explosion of entertainment or a possible underwhelming yet over-stunted film?
The Visuals
Visually The Fall Guy offers a behind-the-scenes look of filmmaking. With heavy pyrotechnics, fun camera angles, and plenty of action sequences throughout along with a great picturesque backdrop this Fall Guy offers an explosively large scale for an action/comedy.
Photosensitivity Warning. For viewers prone to epilepsy and photosensitivity, The Fall Guy does have one scene sequence with bright flashing lights and disorienting camera movements that could be nausea inducing for some. The scene is pretty obvious and used to simulate disorientation on purpose (see below for reasoning).
The Story
From real life stunt man and director David Leitch (“Bullet Train“) comes his most personal film yet. The Fall Guy, a 2024 love letter to hard-working and under-appreciated crew of action thriller films everywhere, is written by Drew Pearce (“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw“) and is produced by Kelly McCormick (“Atomic Blonde“). The award-winning cast stars Ryan Gosling (“Barbie“) as stuntman Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer“) as director Jody Moreno, along with the talents of Winston Duke (“The Black Panther” franchise), Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All At Once“), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass“), and Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso“).
Inspired by the 1980’s The Fall Guy television series created by Glen A Larson, the story follows battle-scarred stuntman Colt Seavers as he is drafted back into action (yes, all of the action stuntman puns) by ex-lover Jody Moreno for a mega-budget film. When a movie star goes missing from the set this real-working hero has to literally save the day all while keeping his day job. I mean, what could possibly go wrong in the process…right?
An action comedy satire teetering the line of being spoofy – it’s the acting that really sells the story. With explosive chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt – their dynamic duo dialogue (say that 5 times fast) along with a fresh beat of laugh out loud humor and explosive action throughout is a winning combo.
This ruthless satire really takes a few doughnut turns around action comedy filmmaking to include some notable lines and a few cameo surprises. And true to his word, Leitch always makes sure to highlight the unsung heroes – the stunt team along the way.
The Fall Guy PG-13 Rating Explained
Is The Fall Guy safe for kids? A Universal Pictures film rated PG-13? Should parents be concerned? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all movie and TV age ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how ratings have shifted over the years with a G-rating no longer an option to help guide parents.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, and even PG-13/TV-14 age ratings teetering on the edge of R or MA ratings (Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night, I see you!), there’s a wide range between the age of 0-14 years old for parents to consider. Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or show is kid friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why is The Fall Guy Movie rated PG-13? In this The Fall Guy Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this 2024 Universal Pictures action comedy film is rated PG-13 for “action and violence, drug content and some strong language.” With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or television show like The Fall Guy is kid friendly. Is The Fall Guy too violent for kids? Is The Fall Guy for kids? Let’s breakdown that PG-13 age rating in The Fall Guy parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. Kids, do not try ANY of this at home. An ode to movie stunt teams, The Fall Guy is true to it’s content – filled to the brim with action and violence sequences that highlight the industry in every possible way. From high speed chases to multiple fight scenes with and without weapons (including swords, spear-like objects, and tasers) to gunshots, pyrotechnics (including people on fire), unbelievable stunt sequences, animal to human violence, attempted (but unsuccessful) human to animal violence, and everything in between, The Fall Guy delivers on real James Bond/Jason Bourne like action – despite the satire humor.
Blood and gore are actually a lot more visible than I expected for this type of film including lots of facial cuts, scrapes, bloody noses, blood, being bound by zip ties, uncomfortable blood curdling screams to reflect pain and torture, and scenes of death. Verbal references to death, murder, suicide, and killing.
Adult Themes. There is a moderate amount of alcohol consumption in The Fall Guy – including liquor (including characters taking shots) and mixed drinks along with consumption of champagne straight from the bottle. Bar scenes are common and characters do act tipsy/drunk at times. However, more concerning is the disclosed “drug content.” There is a scene where a character is drugged (drugs are not seen) with multiple scenes following of this character acting drugged – slow, disoriented, and hallucinating at times. There are multiple references to a “drug dealer,” being “drugged up,” being “high,” and acting “paranoid” post being drugged. No smoking or other drugs present.
Only two toilet humor references in the entire series. One very tame verbal “doing the necessary” with bathroom inference implied and one verbal reference to “diarrhea.”
Does The Fall Guy have sexual innuendo? Uh, yeah! Although not disclosed, there are multiple scenes of hugging and kissing, dancing, one man slapping another man in the behind (clothed), shirtless men characters and women characters wearing tight and revealing outfits. There are no sex scenes in The Fall Guy movie. But we are far from being done.
Sexual innuendo verbal references include “bite people in the balls,” “my balls are drenched,” “you look good in nothing,” referring to relations as “mind blowing experiences,” “making bad decisions,” a “fling” and “like a sushi train,” one reference to falling “in love with my wife’s sister,” multiple “sexy” verbal references, referring to women as working “back on the streets” and as a “lady of the night,” and referring to a man as “hot.” There is one love confession as well.
Language. Does The Fall Guy have strong language? With a count over 50 – I would say so. Foul language phrases and swear words in The Fall Guy movie include: 1 “f-cking,” 1 “d-ck,” 1 “@sshole,” 4 “@ss,” 4 “b-tch,” 3 “bullsh-t,” 30 “sh-t,” 1 “d-mned,” 2 “d-mmit,” 5 “g-ddamn,” 4 ” H-E-double-hockey-sticks,” and 3 middle finger gestures.
Milder bad language phrases and insults in The Fall Guy movie include: “pussy,” “balls” “freaking,” “freaky,” “shut up,” “jeez,” “Jesus,” “Christ,” “g-d,” “oh g-d,” “my g-d” “for g-d’s sake” and “oh my g-d.”
The Fall Guy Age Rating for Kids
With a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes, The Fall Guy Movie 2024 Universal Pictures runs a little longer than usual kids movies. But this action comedy is also packed with explosive action, chase scenes, fight scenes, and “do not try this at home” stunts along with a fast paced story that’s entertaining and funny.
However, with intense violence and blood, drug content, and lots of foul language, The Fall Guy Movie is an action comedy that is a level above more kid friendly live action comedy films such as Goonies or Spy Kids.
The 2024 Universal Pictures’ The Fall Guy movie is most comparable to Argylle meets Free Guy.
This 2024 Universal Pictures action comedy film is rated PG-13 for “action and violence, drug content and some strong language” by the MPAA.
Yes, The Fall Guy movie has two end credit scenes. There is a set of behind-the-scenes footage of some of the stunts from the film at the beginning of the credits – and one mid credits scene.
Based on my The Fall Guy parents guide and mom review above, I would not recommend The Fall Guy Movie to kids younger than the age of 13-14 years old.
With scenes with adult content and strong language, The Fall Guy movie is an action comedy film that is the next level above more kid friendly movies like Goonies or Spy Kids. I advise parents to prescreen the Universal Pictures movie for intense violent scenes, sexual innuendo, and strong language throughout.
Considering the full PG-13 age rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend The Fall Guy to kids younger than the age of 13-14 years old. This The Fall Guy movie PG-13 rating is teetering on an R rating and easily comparable to Free Guy movie ratings.
The Overall
Explosively fun, Ryan Gosling’s still riding high off of his Kenergy – and the audience is going to be here for it.
The Fall Guy is a love story within a love story. It’s action packed, but in a good way. It’s laugh out loud, but in a “I can’t wait to watch it again” way. Told with a fresh beat of comedy and ruthless satire to praise the film industry’s unsung heroes – Leitch’s love letter reads like poetry. And if that wasn’t enough the explosive chemistry on camera (within a camera?) between Gosling and Blunt is chef’s kiss.
There’s a fine line between satire and parody – but unlike Argylle, Ryan Gosling’s “Kenergy” has The Fall Guy hitting all of the right action sequences.
