Parents Guide Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review | Safe for Kids?
Call it fate. Call it destiny. But the Deadpool & Wolverine bro-mance level is far from reaching climax – Marvel multiverse climax that is.
In the tease of all teases the epic love story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally arrived in the most anticipated team up of summer 2024. Hotter than a Challengers sexual tension fest – the 2016 Deadpool and 2018 Deadpool 2 sequel 6-year anticipation is dripping with hopeful Ryan Reynolds one liners and Hugh Jackman jacked-ness in the one Marvel 2024 film sequel that promises to finally deliver SOMETHING (anything!) worthy for the Marvel movie fans.
But can a retired mercenary and a recovering X-man teamwork make the love/hate relationship dreams work? Or are these Marvel characters as old and tired as fans watching the Fox/Disney merger?
In this Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full R age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in this new 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine parents guide to the new Deadpool 3 sequel. A no-spoiler parent review of Deadpool & Wolverine 2024, is this 2024 Deadpool 3 movie the reminder that Fox/Disney dreams do come true?
The Visuals
Don’t fix what ain’t broken. Visually Deadpool & Wolverine is back to the formula of visuals that has made the Marvel merc with a mouth franchise well-loved for over 8 years. This 2024 Deadpool 3 sequel offers fans a wide variety of fun camera angles, CGI galore, and a bit of over-the-top Deadpool graphics that land somewhere between roasting and honoring the whole MCU dynasty. Nothing too surprising here – the spewing blood, gore, violence, and slo-mo montages are all intact. Don’t you worry.
Photosensitivity Warning. For viewers prone to epilepsy and photosensitivity, Deadpool & Wolverine has one scene towards the end of the film sequel that could contain dizzying and fast spinning camera movements that could be nausea inducing for some. Scenes of bright flashing or strobing lights also occur towards the back end of the film only.
The Story
Night at the Museum franchise director Shawn Levy joins the Deadpool family for the 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine film sequel written by Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things“), Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (“Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2“), and Zeb Wells (“Robot Chicken“). Cast for the Deadpool 3 sequel include Ryan Reynolds (“Free Guy“) returning as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool and Hugh Jackman (“The Greatest Showman“) as Logan aka Wolverine along with Emma Corrin (“The Crown“), Morena Baccarin (“Firefly“), Rob Delaney (“Argylle“), Leslie Uggams (“Roots“), Karan Soni (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse“), and Matthew Macfadyen (“Pride & Prejudice“).
Suit up, Deadpool fans. In the bro-mance team-up of all team-ups as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman truly eat up their love/hate relationship on and off camera – and the effort shows in a good way. It’s everything you love about the Deadpool franchise – but this time with 6-years of planning and the dials turned all of the way up.
Deadpool doesn’t skimp on the story, thankfully. The character growth, relationship build, and the jokes are all still there – but with unexpected twists, Easter Eggs, and Fox 20th Century Studios nods that only true fans will be able to pick up and appreciate. Avoid spoilers as much as you can, so you can fully immerse in the Deadpool 3 sequel experience free from the tired post-Avengers Marvel negative Nellies. But there is one glaring theme throughout Deadpool & Wolverine that is really weighing me down.
Is Deadpool & Wolverine for kids? Here’s why this Deadpool sequel does NOT deserve an R rating.
Deadpool & Wolverine R Rating Explained
Is Deadpool & Wolverine safe for kids? A Disney/Marvel film sequel rated R? That’s the day I thought I’d never see. Should parents be concerned? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all movie and TV age ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how ratings have shifted over the years with a G-rating no longer an option to help guide parents.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, and even PG-13/TV-14 age ratings teetering on the edge of R or MA ratings (Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night, I see you!), there’s a wide range between the age of 0-14 years old for parents to consider. Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or show is kid friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why is Deadpool & Wolverine rated R? In this Deadpool & Wolverine Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this 2024 Marvel Deadpool & Wolverine third film sequel is rated R for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.” With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or television show like Deadpool & Wolverine is kid friendly. Is Deadpool & Wolverine too violent for kids? Too crude? Is Deadpool & Wolverine for kids? Let’s breakdown that R age rating in this Deadpool & Wolverine Movie parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. Deadpool & Wolverine is a Marvel action/comedy sequel checks the gore and violence category with a big whopping red checkmark. Expect lots of fist fighting and hand-to-hand combat (including supernatural fantasy fighting), weapons usage (including swords and knives) kill shots with guns, deaths and inferred deaths. There are multiple fight scenes and sequences that will entertain and delight fans. Supernatural powers and superhuman/superhero abilities are also portrayed and used. Some of the superhuman powers visuals may be disturbing to watch for some viewers.
Blood and gore are HEAVY but on par with previous Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films, including open gunshot wounds, bloody wounds, facial cuts, scrapes, bloody noses, bruising, blood pools and bursts, dismemberments, skeletons, and beheadings.
Adult Themes. There is a moderate to heavy amount of alcohol consumption in Deadpool & Wolverine, including liquor, beer, and shots. Pub and tavern scenes are common as well as characters stumbling and acting drunk. There are multiple scenes of characters “chugging” alcohol – and one scene of a character drinking rubbing alcohol. Drug references are used often in Deadpool, but are contained to verbal references only – mostly to “cocaine” names and slang for humor purposes.
Religious verbal references and symbolism are used throughout Deadpool & Wolverine – including verbal references to “Marvel Jesus,” “Messiah,” “Jesus Christ,” and one possible disturbing scene of a visual crucifixion depiction.
Toilet humor verbal references are surprisingly mild. There is only one reference to being “soiled.”
Does Deadpool & Wolverine have sexual innuendo? Like you’re surprised. Visually, there’s a few scenes of mild kissing, hugging and holding hands There are a couple of shots of a hand grabbing male bottom and frontal area while clothed Some sensual dancing and thrusting movements with clothes on does occur and there are a few naked shirtless scenes for the purpose of eye candy. One character does show off piercings on both of his nipples with a chain leading down into his pants line. Some sexy (and maybe not so sexy) superhero costuming is displayed. There is a very visible bulging situation happening in some of the scenes of male genitalia – but thankfully clothed. No sex scenes featured.
Sexual innuendo verbal references are BEYOND the first two Deadpool movies and basically cover the entire rainbow of what could be possibly be used as innuendo. I could probably write an entire blog post on just the sensual innuendo references – so I will try to condense into the most notable. Verbal sexual/adult references in Deadpool & Wolverine include “nut milk,” “anal birth,” “necrophilia,” “predator,” “stripper,” “camel toe,” “boob,” “tits,” referring to male parts as “cock,” “sack of nuts,” “d-ck,” and comparing to food/non-food/animal like imagery, multiple references to having sex or sexual actions including “f-cking,” “smash-terbating,” “vaginal sex,” “doing it,” “blow job,” “d-ck out of your mouth,” “special sock,” “fondled,” “swallow,” references to certain sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), and sensual references to a person’s “fingers.” One LGTBQ+ verbal reference to “the gays.”
Language. Does Deadpool & Wolverine have language? I wasn’t prepared for what is going to be the most epically frequent foul list I have ever created. Foul language phrases and swear words in the new Deadpool 3 sequel film sequel include: 102 “f-ck,” (yes I literally counted over 100+ of the f-bomb word in one movie), 7 “motherf-cker, 2 “c-nt,” 5 “d-ck,” 6 “b-tch,” 2 “b-llsh-t,” 22 “sh-t,” 1 “g-dd-mmit,” 3 “g-dd-mn,” 1 “d-mmit,” 4 “d-mn,” 4 “@sshole,” 3 “@ss,” 2 “pr-cks,” 3 “H-E-double-hockey-sticks,” and 3 “suck.”
Seems like a letdown to share these lesser bad words for Deadpool 3 now. Milder bad language phrases and insults in Deadpool & Wolverine include: “nipples,” “nuts,” “boob,” “g-spot,” “cock,” “blow job,” “stripper,” “butt,” “anal,” “buttock,” “tits,” “fondled,” “screwed,” “stupid,” “idiots,” “retarded,” “moron,” “hate,” “piss off,” “shut up,” “dumb,” “heck,” “Jesus” “Jesus Christ,” “g-d,” “oh g-d,” and “oh my g-d.”
Deadpool & Wolverine Age Rating for Kids
With a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes, this Deadpool & Wolverine 2024 sequel is on point for the Deadpool films. However this Deadpool 3 sequel is dialed up much more in terms of language and innuendo – more than ever shown in previous Deadpool film iterations
With graphic violence (on par for Deadpool and Deadpool 2), strong language, drug references, and strong sexual innuendo (visual and verbal), Deadpool & Wolverine is an action comedy film that is beyond anything we have seen from the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. And I don’t say this lightly as a parent of teens.
The Disney+ 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine movie sequel is most like Deadpool 2016 and Deadpool 2 2018 Marvel franchise films.
This 2024 Marvel/Disney Deadpool & Wolverine film sequel is rated R for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references” by the MPAA.
Yes, Deadpool & Wolverine has 2 end credit scenes, one mid-credits behind-the-scenes clips and one end credits scene at the VERY end of the credits.
Based on my Deadpool & Wolverine parents guide and mom review above, I would not recommend Deadpool & Wolverine sequel to kids younger than the age of 17-18 years old.
With strong language, strong sexual innuendo, drug references, and multiple scenes depicting graphic violence, Deadpool & Wolverine 2024 is a Marvel action/comedy sequel film that is a level beyond what we have even seen for the Deadpool franchise before. I advise parents to prescreen Deadpool 3 for intense violent scenes foul language and descriptive sexual dialogue.
Considering the full R age rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend the new 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine to kids younger than the age of 17-18 years old. This Deadpool & Wolverine R rating is STRONG and teetering on an NC-17 rating – and is easily the most adult of the Deadpool movie franchise ratings. As a parent of teens myself – I strongly urge parents to prescreen and consider how much more “adult” this Deadpool & Wolverine film sequel is compared to Deadpool and Deadpool 2. I won’t be allowing my 15-year old son to see this one.
The Overall
Deadpool & Wolverine is the foulest, filthiest, fourth wall breaking sequel ever – but at what point are we literally beating the Deadpool horse? Already a strong R rating pushing the limits of an NC-17 rating with even more swearing, even more innuendo, and even more disturbing images – our beloved Multiverse roasting merc with a mouth cannot keep up this dialed up pace.
To recap for the Deadpool & Wolverine parents guide: Deadpool 2, Deadpool, Deadpool & Wolverine in order of kid-friendly to NOT even close to kid friendly for the Deadpool film franchise. Are we clear?
On the plus side, Deadpool & Wolverine is the love letter to Fox, an open door to all of the years of Fox/Marvel superhero goodness (foreshadowing?), and the bro-mance that fans have been impatiently waiting for. Don’t misquote me here – Deadpool & Wolverine is a good sequel – with plenty of Marvel Easter Eggs, cameos, and team ups that hardcore ADULT fans will appreciate finally seeing on-screen. Deadpool’s uncanny ability to connect with the audience through his flawed humanness and sentimentality continues to impress.
But is it all just TOO MUCH? Or is this Ryan Reynolds “going out with a bang-bang” goodbye? I’m genuinely asking fans at what point is it too much language, too much innuendo, too much Deadpool one liners – detracting from the story, the character relationship building, and the fun that this franchise is known for? Or is the raunchy and foul trajectory going to become the norm for Disney? Wouldn’t that be a Disney princess of a different color…
