Argylle Movie Review | Safe for Kids? Parents Guide
Did anyone have spy thriller action comedy on their movie bingo card for 2024?
Argylle has stumped me for 2024’s list of movie releases. A Taylor Swift book author conspiracy, a model’s cat, a Hamilton star, a Marvel hero, and Dua Lipa dyeing her hair Barbie blonde. Mystery abounds in this spy thriller inside and outside of the film’s candor. But I can’t quite put a finger on if this espionage is intriguing, confusing, or just plain weird.
I love the the glitz and glam of an all-star cast. But as we all know, an all star cast can make or break a film. And Argylle is certainly filled with big names from Bryce Dallas Howard to Dua Lipa (yes, she dyed her hair blonde).
Director Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to the world of spy thrillers, with 3 popular Kingsman movies in his repertoire. But can all of Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman horses and all the Kingsman men put Argylle back together again?
In this Argylle Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full PG-13 age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in this new 2024 Argylle parents guide to the new Universal Pictures live action spy film. A no-spoiler parent review of Argylle 2024, does this mystery have all glitz and glam but no substance?
The Visuals
Visually, Argylle is playful. The scenery, the costumes, the drama, the hair – everything is visually enhanced to rival that of a James Bond film – without taking itself too seriously. Expect some big explosions, chase scenes and wanderlust locales. But also expect that balanced with scenes of unrealistic, cringe CGI cat moments as well.
Photosensitivity Warning. For viewers prone to epilepsy and photosensitivity, there are a few scenes with dizzying and fast spinning camera movements that could be nausea inducing for some. No scenes of bright flashing or strobing lights of note.
The Story
Inspired by the real 2024 Elly Conway espionage thriller book of the same name (the one NOT written by Taylor Swift), Argylle is an spy thriller action comedy based film directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kingsman: The Secret Service“) and written by Jason Fuchs (“Wonder Woman“). The all-star cast stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World” franchise) as author Elly Conway with her cat Aflie, Sam Rockwell (“The Green Mile” and “The Bad Guys“) as cat-allergic spy Aiden, and co-stars Henry Cavill (“The Witcher“), John Cena (“The Suicide Squad“), Dua Lipa (“Barbie“), Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad“), Catherine O’Hara (“Schitts Creek“), Ariana DeBose (“Wish“) and Samuel L. Jackson (“Secret Invasion“).
The confusing movie marketing worked in Argylle’s advantage. I went in with low to no expectations for this film. But what I walked away with was yet another Kingsman infused story that was smart, funny, and unexpectedly fun.
Multiple plot twists and espionage action balanced with cheeky humor and Broadway caliber dances – while sometimes completely over the top and cringe-y – all comes together by the end of the film. You’re steadily entertained, with plenty of shocking surprises, crosses and double crosses, and laugh out loud moments.
Argylle is seriously a spy thriller and not-so-seriously an action comedy – and Matthew Vaughn can somehow pull off both genres in the same film. Genius.
Argylle PG-13 Rating Explained
Is Argylle movie safe for kids? A Universal Pictures spy thriller rated PG-13? Should parents be concerned? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all movie and TV age ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how ratings have shifted over the years with a G-rating no longer an option to help guide parents.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, and even PG-13/TV-14 age ratings teetering on the edge of R or MA ratings (Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night, I see you!), there’s a wide range between the age of 0-14 years old for parents to consider. Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or show is kid friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why is Argylle rated PG-13? In this Argylle Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this 2024 spy thriller film from Universal Pictures is rated PG-13 for “strong violence and action and some strong language.” With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or television show like Argylle is kid friendly. Is Argylle too scary for kids? Is Argylle not for kids? Let’s breakdown that PG-13 age rating in this Argylle parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. For a spy thriller with a dose of action and comedy, Argylle was actually surprising in the violence and suspense category. Expect lots of fist fighting, hand-to-hand combat, kill shots, deaths and inferred deaths, bone crunching noises, mild animal violence, and a variety of weapons including guns, knives and explosive devices.
However, given the twist of comedy, Argylle is refreshingly less violent and bloody when compared to other espionage films. There is minimal blood and gore in Argylle – with the focus being more on the action, story and comedy. Mild peril and suspense are also present. Expect a few violent surprises and twists.
Adult Themes. There is a moderate amount of alcohol consumption in Argylle – including liquor, champagne, and wine consumption – mostly for “glam” effect. No one acts drunk. There is discussion “experimenting with drugs,” one line suggesting that a character took “2 Adderall,” and a few scenes inferring possible poisoning, but nothing shown.
One “on the toilet” reference, but overall light on toilet humor. References to mental health including discussion of anxiety, panic attacks, psychopaths, and hallucinations. Hospital scenes and medicine injections also portrayed.
Sexual content includes 2 kisses between characters, hand holding, a couple of sexual innuendo references “to pop that cherry” and being a “pervert,” sensual dancing with a few scenes with camera focus on a person’s “crotch” for comedic effect, and sexy, revealing outfits. Confessions of love. No nudity seen. Overall, very light on adult content – but definitely present.
Language. Argylle wasn’t kidding about the use of strong language. This film basically covers the whole rainbow of colorful word choices. Foul language phrases and swear words include: 1 “f*ck,” 1 “d!ck,” 1 “@sshole,” 3 “@ss,” 1 “son of a b!tch,” 10 “sh!t,” 1 “bullsh!t,” 7 “g-dd@mn,” 1 “g-d d@mmit,” 1 “d@mn,” 6 “H-E-double-hockey-sticks,” 1 “crap,” 1 “SOB” (the abbreviated letters together), and 2 “BS” (also the abbreviated letters together).
Milder bad language phrases and insults in Argylle include: “stupid,” “weirdo,” “pervert,” “imbecile,” “scumbag,” “sucker,” “dumb,” “freaking,” “shut up,” “holy moly,” jeez,” “g-d,” “oh my g-d,” “honest to g-d,” “dear g-d,” and “baby Jesus.”
Argylle Movie Age Rating for Kids
With a runtime of 2 hours 15 minutes, this Argylle 2024 film runs a little long. Add in a complex and twisted spy movie plot, lots of dialogue and espionage references, there may be parts of the film that may be confusing and/or boring for little kids.
Along with strong language and multiple scenes depicting violence, Argylle is a spy thriller action comedy that is the next level above more kid friendly spy films like Get Smart or even My Spy.
Argylle is most like the spy comedy Kingsman film franchise including Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and The King’s Man.
This 2024 spy thriller film from Universal Pictures is rated PG-13 for “strong violence and action and some strong language” by the MPAA.
Yes, Argylle does have one mid credit scene that Matthew Vaughn lovers will appreciate. There are no other end credit scenes.
Based on my Argylle parents guide and mom review above, I would not recommend Argylle to kids younger than the age of 11-12 years old.
Considering the full PG-13 age rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Argylle to kids younger than the age of 11-12 years old. This Argylle PG-13 rating is pretty spot on and easily comparable to the Kingsman movie franchise ratings.
With strong language and multiple scenes depicting violence/suspense, Argylle is a spy thriller action comedy that is the next level above more kid friendly spy films like Get Smart or even My Spy. I advise parents to prescreen the film for strong language and violence.
The Overall
If Argylle’s tagline is the greater the spy, the bigger the lie – is the audience the one about to be duped? Don’t worry – Kingsman fans will not be disappointed.
The cat’s out of the bag. I don’t even own a cat, but I NEED an Alfie cat backpack pronto. Argylle is seriously a not-so-serious spy thriller that is predictably unpredictable – and somehow it all comes together brilliantly.
A surprising yet solidly fun film for February, Argylle is a mystery wrapped in espionage wrapped in cheeky humor that is uniquely Matthew Vaughn. And I’m here for all of it. The plot thickens more than once, you may be more than double crossed, but the most unexpected twist is that Argylle is unpredictably masterful in presenting a spy thriller action comedy that actually delivers.
