Healthy Apple Doughnuts for Valentine’s Day
How do you like them apples?
My daughter just had her 33rd tantrum of the day…over the way I cut her apple slices. By the time I re-slice in the exact size and shape that my child will accept, BOOM. Brown apples. Bang head on wall, snack time is over. A natural non-browning apple, it’s like Mom’s “unicorn” snack. What if I told you that these apples actually exist and is kid-approved too?
Find out how why our family loves Opal® apples and make these Healthy Apple Doughnuts for Valentine’s Day. Sayonara, brown apples!
Meet Non-Browning Opal Apples
I was seriously shocked to hear that non-browning apples actually exist, and they’re available right now! A cross between Golden Delicious and Topaz, Opal® apples are grown in Washington state and shipped all over the U.S. to your favorite apple retailers now through March. What makes these yellow apples different than any other apple out there? You have to slice it to believe it!
- Naturally resistant to oxidation and browning
- Non-GMO Project verified
- Crispy texture
- Sweet and delicious
I put Opal® apples to the test, by slicing and letting them sit out on my kitchen counter. My apple didn’t even start the brown process until 4 hours in. 4 hours, y’all! And the taste is amazingly sweet and crunchy. Our kids LOVE them! Perfect for picky preschoolers (ahem, my daughter), packing fun school lunches for my son, or enjoying a sweet apple at home, our family can’t get enough of our favorite apples of the season!
Healthy Apple Doughnuts

Ingredients:
- Apples, such as naturally non-browning Opal® apples
- Greek Yogurt (I used Strawberry for a natural pink color for Valentine’s Day)
- Sprinkles of choice (think fun colors and shapes that your kids will love!)
Directions:
- Cut apples in crosswise slices, about 1/4-1/2 inch thick.
- Using a melon baller or small circle cookie cutter, cut and remove apple core from the slice.
- Spread Greek yogurt over the top of the “apple doughnut” to coat.
- Add sprinkles.
- Enjoy!
Eat immediately, place in your child’s school lunchbox or enjoy as a fun after-dinner dessert! It’s a fun way to enjoy your doughnuts and eat them too! My kids can’t resist the taste too. Even for this post, I was able to slice the apples, help my son with his math homework and come back and finish making these Healthy Apple Doughnuts. How cool is that? No browning!
