A no-spoiler parent review of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, does Knives Out 2 sharpen it’s murder mystery recipe for success?
Or are we in for another deadly sequel disappointment?
The Visuals
Visually, this sequel backdrop is out of a travel magazine. Set on a remote island in Greece, this Knives Out 2 movie has a completely different vibe from the dark castle of the 2019 original. Dreamy, fantasy-like, and a wanderlust vacation rolled in one, this relaxing getaway is the perfect scene for a modern day murder mystery.
*Photosensitivity warning: No bright, flashing lights per se, but there are scenes in darkness.
The Story
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson has certainly put his stamp on the modern-day murder mystery. Weaving together an all-star celebrity cast, a fresh eye, sharp wit, and even a little nostalgia, the original 2019 Knives Out movie proves that you can teach an old genre new tricks.
Returning to the franchise, director Rian Johnson writes and assembles yet another star-studded cast for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery sequel. Daniel Craig (“James Bond franchise“) returns as detective Benoit Blanc alongside Edward Norton (“Fight Club“) as Miles Bron, Janelle Monáe (“Hidden Figures“) as Cassandra Brand, Kathryn Hahn (“WandaVision“) as Claire Debella, Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton“) as Lionel Toussaint, Jessica Henwick (“Game of Thrones“) as Peg, Madelyn Cline (“Stranger Things“) as Whiskey, with Kate Hudson (“Almost Famous“) as Birdie Jay and Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy“) as Duke Cody.
New characters, new location, new crime, same accent. Detective Benoit Blanc is showing some leg in the newest whodunnit film. But this time, the story is a little sexier, raunchier, and more adult-like than ever before. Filled with lots of dialogue, character building and lots of laugh-out-loud moments, Knives Out has certainly evolved since the last murder mystery. But with Daniel Craig holding together this loosely tied sequel, his southern charm and sleuthing skills haven’t lost their touch.
Sprinkle in some high celebrity cameos to round out Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and you have one entertaining modern day murder mystery. However, there are quite a few new themes and red flags that parents need to consider.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery PG-13 Rating Explained
Is Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery safe for kids? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all PG-13 ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how movie ratings have shifted over the years.
And in case you didn’t notice, Knives Out has switched production companies – with Netflix purchasing the Knives Out franchise from Lionsgate in anticipation of the 2022 Glass Onion sequel. But with the production switching blades, has the MPAA rating remained predictable for this new Netflix produced film? Or is this Glass Onion PG-13 rating a mystery when it comes to family friendly movies? Honestly, I’m kind of excited to unwrap and review my first Netflix murder mystery movie.
Why Is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery rated PG-13? In this Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this Knives Out 2 film sequel is rated PG-13 for “strong language, some violence, sexual material and drug content.” Does Glass Onion compare with Knives Out as far as family-friendliness or is this whodunnit too much for kids? With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is kid friendly. Is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery for kids? Or are there big red flags for parents? Let’s breakdown that PG-13 age rating in this Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. As expected, this murder mystery film does feature highlighted death scenes. Be prepared for in depth discussion of the “how” behind the death, including some mildly graphic visuals (blood included) and possibly triggering event steps . Hand slaps to the face occur as well as use of weapons, arson and mayhem. Overall, suspense and violence in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are mild.
Adult Themes. Ahem, murder mystery means we need to talk about death for a little bit longer. Discussion of “suicide” may be triggering for some, as well as grief and loss. Drug and alcohol usage are prevalent throughout this film, including discussion of pills, discussion of “drugging” people, smoking cigars, getting drunk, and visual of a “cannabis” sign. Also of note in this section is the in-depth discussion of the “how” the murder was done, complete with steps and visuals. And to round out the adult behavior, add in discussion of ethnic slurs with examples.
The adult content and sexual innuendo are also themes throughout Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. I found this a shocking surprise when compared to the original film. Visuals of sex toys, condoms. Men and women in skimpy clothing and even skimpier bathing suits – however thankfully no one gets completely naked. One suggestive statue. One deep kissing scene with a woman straddled on top of a man. Multiple scenes describing “boobs” and “boners.”
Language. Sexual content isn’t the only shocking surprise in the new Knives out 2. Unfortunately, vulgar and extensive language is used throughout the film. The swear words and bad language phrases were said so often, it was completely distracting, taking away from the plot. Swear words include 2 “f-bombs,” over 25 “sh!t” uses, 9 “b!tch” phrases, 10 “@ss” / “@sshole” uses, 7 “d@mn” / “d@mmit” phrases, 1 “b@stard,” 9 “h-e-double-hockey-sticks,” and multiple “middle finger” visuals. Seriously, I told you it was a lot!
Milder phrases include “freaking,” “titties,” “boner,” “geez,” “Jesus,” “B.S.,” “oh my gosh,” “Oh Lord,” 2 examples of ethnic slurs (definitely seen as offensive), and so many “oh my g-d” phrases, I lost count. (My guess is around 40.) When you compare the language of the 2022 Knives Out movie to the 2019 Knives Out – the language is exponentially greater in this sequel.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Movie Age Rating for Kids
With a runtime of 2 hours 19 minutes, how does Glass Onion compare to Knives Out? Is Glass Onion kid friendly when compared to the original whodunnit? Coming off an Marvel high, seeing Chris Evans in a completely different role was enticing for kids. And comparatively, even I was ok with my then 11-year old son watching the original Knives Out. However, times have changed, movie sequels evolve, and apparently PG-13 ratings are not what they used to be.
With the introduction of sexual content and use of strong, vulgar language throughout Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, I honestly am sad to say that this whodunnit is not kid friendly or family friendly. Like at all. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is NOT comparable to the original film. With Knives Out 2 streaming on Netflix this December, I strongly caution parents to oversee your child’s viewing choices.
Being that Glass Onion is a loose sequel to Knives Out, I would say this whodunnit is most comparable to the original Knives Out, with aspects of Murder on the Orient Express/Death on the Nile – but much more vulgar with the increased intensity and amount of foul language. language.
No, this Knives Out 2 sequel has no end credits scene to wait for. Feel free to go when the credits start to roll.
The MPAA has rated this 2022 Knives Out 2 film sequel PG-13 for “strong language, some violence, sexual material and drug content.“
Based on my Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery parents guide and review for parents above, Glass Onion is NOT comparable to the PG-13 rating of the original 2019 Knives Out movie. So if your kids were excited to see the Knives Out 2 sequel, parents you may want to reconsider.
Considering the full PG-13 rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to kids younger than the age of 13-14 years old.
Considering the full PG-13 rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to kids younger than the age of 13-14 years old.
True to the PG-13 rating, I recommend parents to prescreen the new Knives Out sequel for vulgar language, suggestive content, and graphic discussion of suicide and death. I am shocked to see that this Knives Out sequel was not given an R rating. And I truly hope parents get the chance to preview this film before this movie gets in the hands of curious little streamers.
The Overall
Not shaken at the word sequel, but certainly stirring up the whodunnit genre, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery takes another stab at the murder mystery – and triumphs at sleuthing audiences once again. But I’m sad to see Knives Out 2 stray so far from the original, more classic murder mystery. The vulgarity alone almost killed the entertainment. The constant barrage of language and adult themes were a huge turn off. In the voice of Captain America “language!”
