DIY Guardians of the Galaxy Baby Groot Ornament

‘Tis the season for Christmas trees, ornaments and Guardians of the Galaxy! Ever since I heard James Gunn say that the hilarious dance-off outtakes were going to be in the Guardians of the Galaxy DVD, I knew that I had to own it.

And I can’t believe that the day is finally here. The Guardians of the Galaxy DVD is on release tomorrow, December 9th. So to celebrate this amazing Marvel movie milestone and the holiday season, we got crafty with this DIY Baby Groot Ornament! How can you make your own Baby Groot Ornament for under $2? I’d love to show you : )

Add Guardians of the Galaxy to your holiday season with this adorable Baby Groot ornament! Dancing just like in the movie, this little guy is so ready for tree hanging!

What You Will Need:

  • 1 Baby Groot Ornament Printable Template found HERE
  • 1 Paper Wine Bag (at least 4 inches wide x 16 inches long)
  • 1 Tiny Terra Cotta Pot (mine was about 2 inches in diameter x 1.5 inches high)
  • 2 Black Buttons
  • 1 Ornament Hook
  • Green Embroidery Floss
  • Black Sharpie/Marker
  • Pencil
  • Hot Glue Gun

Directions:

Groot craft tutorial

1. Configure wine bag, closed side up. Using the FREE Baby Groot Ornament Printable Template, trace and cut out the Baby Groot body out of the paper bag.

2. In the “Head” of Groot, make shallow scissor cuts in the top, about 1/2 deep. We are now going to make his “hair.” Twist the little thin strips into tight spirals. Hope that you love this motion. You’ll be twisting for quite a few more steps 🙂

3. Now find the neck and twist into a tight spiral, about 2-4 turns. Twist the arms into tight spirals as well. Feel free to bend and twist in different directions to give him a “dancing” impression, just like the Guardians of the Galaxy movie! Twist the rest of the body all the way down to the end.

4. Focusing back on the head, use your Black marker to make a small smiley line for a mouth. Glue on the black buttons for eyes.

5. Using the green embroidery floss, wrap your “vines” around your Baby Groot as desired. I loved sinking the thread into the grooves of my paper bag twists. Glue into place if needed.

6. Take a piece of green floss and thread through the bottom hole of the pot and around the outside. Tie a secure knot. Place your ornament hook through your green loop.

7. Now encircle your Baby Groot body into the bottom of the clay pot. Squish tightly in there so your Baby Groot is sitting upright in the pot. VOILA! You have an adorable Baby Groot ready for dancing into the holiday season! The best part is that this craft literally cost me less than $2?! How awesome would this little guy be on your Christmas tree this year?

Guardians of the Galaxy DVD Features

Speaking of Baby Groot, I’m so excited to see those dancing moves in action again on DVD! The new Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-Ray/DVD/HD release has tons of extra features and goodies that we didn’t get to enjoy in the theaters!
