Disenchanted Movie Review | Safe for Kids? Parents Guide
And they lived Happily Ever After-er? It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since Disney’s 2007 Enchanted film entered our lives. But beyond catchy tunes, dancing cockroaches, and curtain dresses, Disney’s attempt at yet another live action sequel may prove to be a true love chef’s kiss or a delusional fairy tale turned nightmare.
In this Disenchanted Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full PG age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in the new Disney Enchanted sequel, with a full parents guide to the new Disney+ musical live action film. A no-spoiler parent review of Disenchanted, does this 15 year in the making Enchanted 2 movie live up to the fairy tale dreams of the fans?
Or are we all Disenchanted with these B-list Disney+ sequels?
The Visuals
Visually, Disenchanted is fairy tale stunning. Bright costuming, fairy tale backdrops, nostalgic animation and CGI magic effects all have been upgraded. You can tell that 15 years of technology and cinematic advances have improved the overall look of the Enchanted franchise. Blending the live action with the CGI as the Disenchanted signature – chef’s kiss.
*Photosensitivity warning: there are multiple scenes with CGI “magic” used, including bright flashing lights and lightning-like effects.
The Story
The Enchanted reunion is finally here! The original fairy tale cast return to the magic with Amy Adams (“Catch Me If You Can“) as Giselle, Patrick Dempsey (“Grey’s Anatomy“) as Robert, Idina Menzel (“Frozen“) as Nancy Tremaine, and James Marsden (“Sonic the Hedgehog“) as Prince Edward. Along with newcomer Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids“) as Malvina Monroe, new director Adam Shankman (2007 “Hairspray“) and new original music by THE Alan Menken, this happily ever after sequel definitely has all of the talent needed to create a worthy storybook ending.
It’s been 15 years since Giselle and Robert had their happily ever after. But as with any princess midlife crisis, raising a baby and a teenager all while searching for the perfect fairy tale ending becomes challenging. Giselle’s family picks up and moves to suburbia. And from their the happily never after begins.
With Director Adam Shankman on board, I was happy to see this musical theater lover staying true to the original Enchanted formula. Combining new songs, dance numbers, an engaging yet predictable fairy tale plotline, and even a few Disney Princess Easter Eggs, Disenchanted is full of fan-serviced nostalgia, whimsy and fairy tale trope humor.
And the cast hasn’t lost their touch – fans will fall in love with the characters all over again. Seeing Amy Adams and Idina Menzel work their magic in their musical numbers – it was Disney Broadway perfection. But this fairy tale is far from perfection. With 15 years waiting for a sequel, there are a few changes to the Enchanted PG rating that parents should note.
Disenchanted PG Rating Explained
Is Disenchanted safe for kids? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all PG ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how movie ratings have shifted over the years with G-rated movies, now history.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, there’s a wide range between the age of 0-12 years old for parents to consider. (Most recently, Hocus Pocus 2 had quite the PG rated controversy on social media.) Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie is family friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why Is Disenchanted rated PG? In this Disenchanted Movie Review | Safe for Kids?, this Enchanted 2 film sequel has an MPAA age rating of PG for “mild peril and language.” Is Disenchanted on par with the original 2007 Enchanted film, or has Giselle gotten a bit cheeky in her elder years? Let’s breakdown that PG age rating in this Disenchanted parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. Mild torture, very mild peril, vomiting noises and a few belches. No blood, gore or scenes that are too scary for kids.
Adult Themes. A few sexy, low cut dresses with verbal reference to such, mild kissing and hugging. Use of magic, discussion of fairy tale creatures and witches. Thankfully no innuendo this time around. A definite plus for the Disenchanted sequel.
Language. Surprisingly, language was introduced in this Enchanted sequel. And sadly, I wasn’t a fan of the new addition. Overall, mild swear words include 1 “h-e-double-hockey-sticks” reference and 1 “sucked.” Other possible foul language includes 3 “oh my g-d” phrases, 3 “what the heck” sayings, 1 “geez,” and 1 use of “hate.” Mild insults include “stupid” and “idiots.”
Again, while overall very mild in the language department, I’m sad to see Disenchanted move “with the times” as the original Enchanted movie did not have ANY swear words of note and became a Disney classic. That h-e-double-hockey sticks phrase could have easily been replaced with another “heck” to make this film sequel more family friendly.
Disenchanted Movie Age Rating for Kids
With a runtime of 1 hour 58 minutes, Disenchanted runs a little on the long side when it comes to a live action musical. But with the addition of quite a few new songs, dance numbers, colorful visuals, animation, and a few laughs, Disenchanted has the right mix that’s comparable to original 2007 Enchanted film. (Add bonus for streaming on Disney+ – yay pause button!)
Kids, families and fans of the original Enchanted will appreciate how Disenchanted stays true to the original in story and music flow, without a dull moment or awkward pause. Certainly not an unpredictable fairy tale by any means (is that an oxymoron?), but entertaining nonetheless.
Disenchanted is very comparable to Enchanted. Your child’s love of fairy tales, Disney movies and musicals will play a huge factor in whether they will enjoy this film sequel. I highly recommend re-watching Enchanted again for a refresher.
There’s a few mid credit animation visuals your kids may enjoy, but no end credit scenes in this Enchanted 2 sequel. No need to stay through all of the credits.
This Enchanted 2 film sequel has an MPAA age rating of PG for “mild peril and language.“
Based on my Disenchanted parents guide and review for parents above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Disney’s Disenchanted to kids younger than the age of 5-6 years old.
Considering the full PG rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Disney’s Disenchanted to kids younger than the age of 5-6 years old. I still recommend parents to prescreen the new Disenchanted for possible offensive language. But overall if you loved Enchanted, Disenchanted has much of the same vibes.
The Overall
Is Disenchanted happily ever after after? For those who have been dreaming of a true love’s sequel, this 15-years in the making fairy tale ending is a fan service through and through. Disney still hasn’t learned their fairy tale lesson – not every successful movie needs a sequel.
A modern day fairy tale with a pinch of realism (and a dash of not taking itself too seriously), I was disenchanted to see the addition of language – as it really pulls from the original fairy tale magic. It’s sad to see Disney conforming to the entertainment industry standards in this sequel to stay “relevant” instead of sticking with it’s roots.
But thankfully I wasn’t completely disillusioned. I fell in love with Amy Adams all over again (and James Marsden – because, yeah). Adding a sequel 15 years after Enchanted – it seems like a desperate move, it looks like a desperate movie, and it ultimately cheapens the original magic. Is this sequel even close to the original? Absolutely not. The talent is there, but the original magic is lacking.
