Why Celebrate National School Lunch Week?
Created back in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National School Lunch Week is dedicated to the celebration of our National School Lunch Program. The longest running federal child nutrition program since 1946, this program ensures that children have access to delicious and nutritious meal options at schools nationwide. 95% of elementary and secondary schools in the U.S. have the National School Lunch Program.
And thanks to this program, 30 million children in the U.S. are served healthy meals per day! I know how thankful I am that we have a School Lunch Program at my school. On the days when this scatterbrained mom forgets lunch, I know that his school can provide a delicious and healthy lunch for him at low cost for us! Ready to get involved in the FUN this week? This week my niece & nephews are on Fall break, so they don’t have school lunch, lol. One or more are eating lunch here everyday. We try to get them to choose healthier foods (not always successfully)–today the 6 year old chose grapes.Yep, nothing else. Just grapes!
