I’ve always wanted to say that.

If you have a little scientist in the house like I do, we’re all about that STEM life lately. First grade science has this little girl so excited about hands-on learning, whether we’re building circuits or talking about the weather. Get Excited About Rain with Bruce’s Big Storm from Disney Books

I adore this age. First grade is where all of the learning magic happens – soaking up books like a sponge, loving anything to do with school (and yes, even homework!), and being so inquisitive about the world around her.

With Hurricane Dorian thankfully missing Florida, I got tons of questions about hurricanes, rain, and weather. While we rode out the storm, we thankfully had good books to keep us company and calm our fears.

Is your child a big Mother Bruce fan too? Bruce’s Big Storm is the latest children’s book from Disney Book Group, perfect for young readers. Our favorite black bear from the award-winning Mother Bruce series is back and grumpy as ever in this hilarious new addition to your home library.

Needless to say, this book was an instant hit with my 6-year old. By best-selling author and illustrator Ryan T. Higgins (remember the classic We Don’t Eat Our Classmates?), this story makes for a great bedtime tale with lots of funny lines and beautiful illustrations on each page.

What we loved the best is how relatable this book was during our recent Florida hurricane. It’s all about coming together during a storm, and just like my children, your kids will love seeing how the animals cope with scary weather, work together as a community, and show love and kindness at the most unexpected times.

Easy Rain Cloud Experiment for Kids

How does it rain? This is one of the many questions I got after reading Bruce’s Big Storm with my daughter. Your curious little scientists will love exploring the answer with this easy rain cloud science experiment for kids.

With just a few supplies found around the home, a printable science observation sheet, and a weather lesson, this fun and easy STEM rain cloud activity is great for parents and children! Perfect for the preschool and young elementary school age, I love how this project allows my daughter to explore science and weather with a whole new look!

What You Will Need:

1 large clear cylinder container (glass jar, tall vase, etc.)
Shaving cream
Water
Pipette or dropper
Food coloring
FREE Printable Experiment Observation Sheet (see below)

Directions:

Fill 2/3 of container with water.
Fill the remaining 1/3 container with shaving cream.
In a small bowl, combine food coloring with water.
Fill pipette/syringe with food coloring. Slowly add a drop of food coloring “rain” over the top of the shaving cream “cloud.”
Observe how many drops it takes to break through the cloud and into the water portion of the container. Record on your observation sheet (see below to print one).

As if you can’t tell by the expressions on her face during this easy STEM project, she was living her best scientist life. This hands-on experience made learning about weather so much fun!

How the Rain Cloud Experiment Works

The shaving cream represents clouds. The colored water represents rain. Clouds gather moisture from the air and soak it in like a sponge. As the cloud fills with moisture, eventually the cloud cannot hold all of the water it has collected. So the cloud releases the water as rain or precipitation.

Your kids will enjoy watching the rain fall with a little help from gravity. You can also use multiple food colors for more fun!
