Disneynature Monkey Kingdom Review | Safe For Kids?
Monkeys, Jaguars and Bears…oh my! They did it again. Disney has left me awestruck, inspired and motivated to protect yet another group of amazing animals. Disneynature Monkey Kingdom is the movie you have been waiting for this Earth Day.
But is this Disneynature film ok for kids? I have the full Disneynature Monkey Kingdom Review | Safe for Kids? right here, including everything you need to consider before taking the kids to see including a breakdown of the visuals, story and the G rating.
The Visuals
It’s hard to believe that 1000 days of filming went into the making of this phenomenal 88 minute movie. We immediately follow the story of a troop of monkeys, learning so much about class structure, behaviors, habitat and more.
You cannot help but be immersed into the majesty, beauty and the unique features that make these creatures amazing to watch. And with Disneynature behind the film, you know that it’s nothing but short of a perfect nature film. Set in the beautiful scenery of Sri Lanka, above the ruins of an ancient land, it’s the perfect backdrop for a kingdom that rarely receives it’s spotlight.
The Story
Of course with every Disneynature film, the story is what makes this movie so touching. Tina Fey is an excellent narrator throughout the film, making sure to make those humorous moments entertaining and those serious moments chilling.
You follow the story of a Macaque monkey Maya and her amazing journey from the bottom of her social structure to the top. She has courage, personality and a baby boy, Kip, that you are going to want to cuddle and take home. Serious baby monkey cuteness here. There are more characters in the movie you will also come to know, including Rajah the king, Lex the challenger and Kumar the outsider. I won’t give away the full details, but this movie is very easy to follow along while filled with animal educational insight, humor and family moments.
Safe for Kids?
Is Monkey Kingdom safe for kids? So the biggest concern about this movie is whether this movie is safe for the whole family. If you’re familiar with the Disneynature experience, then you are aware of how Disney emphasizes preserving as much of the natural behavior as possible.
Language. None. Thankfully no swear words, or bad language innuendo.
Adult Themes. While the animal kingdom birds and bees may be of concern, Disney keeps this movie G-rated in this area as well.
Violence. Here’s where parents of little ones may be concerned. There is an intense “fight” scene between monkey groups, resulting in injury and death. While you do not see the actual death taking place, the lifeless body of a monkey and the mourning process that occurs is clearly evident.
What Monkey Kingdom age rating is recommended for kids?
While monkey fighting/death scenes may persuade many parents from experiencing this type of nature documentary, I actually am very encouraged to take my 6 year old son. He understands that animals do not get to live forever, and I think the realization that the monkeys feel for their own is moving in it’s own right. And being a HUGE animal fan, I know he will get a great deal of new monkey behaviors he has never gotten the chance to see, like the amazing monkeys swimming underwater scene or the eating of the flying termites.
This is such a teachable moment with your children too, especially with Earth Day around the corner. Knowing that you ticket sale goes towards preserving the Macaque Monkeys, there’s so much potential for teaching children about the importance of saving the monkeys, their habitats and supporting conversation efforts. Keeping all of that in mind, with a short runtime of 1 hour and 22 minutes, this movie is highly encouraged for families, with a recommendation for kids aged 4-5 years and up (depending on their sensitivity to animal violence).
The Overall
I am beyond excited to take my son to see Disneynature Monkey Kingdom this week. I know he’s going to laugh, be awed and inspired by all that Macaque monkeys have to offer us. And it’s movies like these that can affect us for years to come.
