Finest Hours – January 29, 2016
Chris Pine. Enough said. Based on a true story, Finest Hours promises a gripping tale at sea.
A heroic action-thriller, “The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. Presented in Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale. On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds.
Zootopia – March 4, 2016
Already having an incredible sneak peek and exclusive Zootopia interview with the creators, this comedy-based animated film will have the whole family rolling in laughter this Spring.
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.
The Jungle Book – April 15, 2016
Remember that beloved animated tale? Disney is bringing the jungle to life with the all new The Jungle Book for 2016. With Jon Favreau on board, I’m already anticipating an amazing visual film.
Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.
Captain America: Civil War – May 6, 2016
Another dreamy Chris has my heart this year. Chris Evans returns in Captain America: Civil War, an epic Marvel film for 2016.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
Alice Through the Looking Glass – May 27, 2016
Are you ready to fall back into the Rabbit Hole? The most intriguing sequel of 2016, Alice Through the Looking Glass, definitely takes Time at a whole new angle. Great time for a recap movie watching night!
ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS reunites the all-star cast from the worldwide blockbuster phenomenon, including: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter along with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. We are also introduced to several new characters: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.
Finding Dory – June 17, 2016
I AM SO EXCITED! This has to be my personally most anticipated film of the year. Finding Dory, the long awaited sequel to Finding Nemo is finally finally making it’s debut! And with my Finding Nemo Party as one of the most popular posts on the blog, you know there’s going to be a party when this movie comes out!
Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?
The BFG – July 1, 2016
When Kathleen Kennedy is excited about a film, you become excited too! The BFG, based on the beloved children’s novel is finally hitting the screens this year. Can you believe the script was done by the same person that did E.T.?
The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.
Pete’s Dragon – August 12, 2016
How exciting! The teaser reel of this film at the D23 Expo had me with chills! A classic tale coming to life yet again, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon will have your kids falling in love with Elliott all over again!
A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon.
Queen of Katwe – Fall 2016
The D23 Expo reveal of Queen of Katwe with Lupita Nyong’o was incredibly moving! Based on another true story, I have a feeling there will be tears associated with this film!
“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016
Benedict Cumberbatch. YUM! One of my favorite actors of my time, this talent is taking on the role of Marvel’s Doctor Strange! Cannot wait for this film…is it November yet?!
Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who after a horrific car accident, discovers a hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Moana – November 23, 2016
A new Disney princess? 🙂 Moana, the newest animated film of Fall 2016, this movie has already had a huge amount of buzz!
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new big screen adventure “Moana” is about a spirited teenager who, with the help of demi-god Maui, sails out on a daring mission to prove herself as a master wayfinder.
Rogue One – December 16, 2016
Star Wars, again?! YES! Rogue One, the anticipated first spin off movie of the Star Wars films comes straight from the minds of Lucasfilm!
Lucasfilm’s Rogue One, which takes place before Star Wars: A New Hope, tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.
The Light Between Oceans – TBD 2016
I’ll be honest, this is the first time I’m hearing of this film. But if you love drama, love and a few talented Golden Globe winner/nominee actors, then this is going to be the film for you!
DreamWorks’ Pictures “The Light Between Oceans” is a heartbreaking drama about fate, love, moral dilemmas and the lengths to which one couple will go to see their dreams realized.
That’s it, 13 movies slated for 2016 from Disney! Are you excited? I definitely am! So be sure to pin and save the dates for an exciting year of movies from Walt Disney Motion Pictures!
