Shrek the Halls Cupcakes to Spread Christmas Cheer
A season of giving, a season of sharing, a season of love. It’s challenging to have these foundations of Christmas sink into little brains, especially when all my kids can think about is how many presents they will get. But we’re working on it. This year I’m making it easy for my kids to step outside of their comfort zones to spread Christmas cheer with 3 easy steps and one jolly green ogre.
Watch A Holiday Movie to Set the Tone
Nothing sets our family in the right holiday spirit like a classic Christmas movie. But you have to choose the right movie to set the tone for the season. Thankfully DreamWorks Animation has some of the best kids holiday movies, all with their favorite characters and important life lessons. So we pulled out our DreamWorks Animation Holiday Collection with Shrek the Halls, Kung Fu Panda Holiday, Merry Madagascar, and Dragons Holiday: Gift of the Night Fury for a little inspiration. Nothing says classic family movie like Shrek the Halls for the season. Featuring our favorite Shrek friends including Donkey, Fiona, Puss in Boots and of course Gingy, we have the whole Shrek family together reinforcing the important message of loving others as family during this special season.
Make Shrek the Halls Cupcakes
With a classic family movie like Shrek the Halls, how could you not be inspired to create a festive treat to love on others this season? These easy Shrek the Halls Cupcakes will definitely help your family get into the Christmas spirit, with a little Shrek inspired inspiration. Here’s how:
Ingredients:
- 24 Cupcakes, un-frosted
- Green Frosting (I used the one in the can, just saying)
- Fresh Strawberries
- Whipped Cream (yup, also from the can)
- Crisp Rice Cereal
- (1) bag of Large Marshmallows
- 3 TBSP Butter
- Green Food Coloring
Directions:
- Prepare Crisp Rice Treats according to box instructions. Add desired green food coloring to melted marshmallow/butter mixture prior to adding cereal.
- Press cereal mixture into flat cookie sheet, about 1/2 inch thick. Cool.
- When cooled, cut and mold your Shrek ears, 2 per cupcake.
- Frost your cupcakes with green frosting.
- Cut tops off of the strawberries. Add a small dollop of whipped cream to the cut top. Place strawberry, cut top down on top of the cupcake. Add another small spot of whipped cream to the point of the strawberry (to create a Santa hat).
- Serve immediately. Refrigerate leftovers.
Take the Holiday Cheer Challenge
Who doesn’t love a good challenge? After watching Shrek the Halls, we couldn’t help but be in the Christmas spirit. We wanted to spread that love we felt for our family to others around us. Who’s the closest to our house? Our neighbors. And with so many festive cupcakes on hand, it wasn’t enough to create holiday cheer. That’s why we always make a point to spread cheer to our neighbors, with the giving of sweets to sweet people! It’s just a little way that our family can show love to others, especially those around us that we don’t get to say more than a few waves and a “hi” throughout the year. So we took some yummy Shrek the Halls Christmas Cupcakes to our neighbors as a sweet holiday surprise. Needless to say, they were loved.
Spreading holiday cheer? Accomplished. Spreading love? Always. I love how the right Christmas movie can really set the tone for the season, especially when it comes to teaching my kids about loving and giving hearts. Shrek the Halls gave us the right message to help my little bakers deliver a sweet holiday greeting to our neighbors. Now, it’s your turn. Grab your favorite Dreamworks Animation Holiday Movie, gather the family and take the Holiday Cheer Challenge. Be sure to share how your family is spreading cheer online with #DWAHolidayChallenge.
