Society can’t dictate this girl’s dreams. My girl IS a superhero. My Daughter Plays Superheroes & Why Yours Should Too. This post is sponsored by Matilda Jane Clothing. All empowering opinions are my own.
My Daughter Plays Superheroes & Why Yours Should Too
I grew up a tomboy. With brothers on either end it was easy to fall into a world of video games, action figures and superhero play. So when I became a mom and my daughter was born, I knew she was in good hands.
She has a strong dad. She has a big brother to look up to. She has so many amazing male role models in her life. She is surrounded by a world obsessed with superheroes. (Um, hello – how many Marvel movies and shows are we up to now?)
But our counterculture still tries to put our sweet little dreamers into a box of pink frills, dolls and stereotypical play. And it’s not ok. My daughter plays superheroes. And yours should too. In fact, I can give you 9 SUPER reasons why all little girls should be their own superheroes, starting with…
Helps her decipher good & evil
She’s standing up for the weak, defending the forces of good and battling evil. Aka, superhero play is giving our girls the tools to know the difference between right and wrong. And we all know how important this is as parents. Good and evil lines can be blurred, and play allows them to figure this crazy world out.
Gives her confidence & power to overcome life’s obstacles
Defeating the bad guys, saving the world and finishing homework – all in a day’s work. When my girl dons her mask, fluffs her super skirt and swishes her cape, she immediately stands a little taller. Her head is held high. Focused. Strong. Powerful. Beautiful. And that’s only with the outfit.
Move over, Batman.
I admit, I had no idea how essential the perfect superhero costume is for role play. But as soon as my girl saw that Matilda Jane Clothing had a superhero costume just for her, she was in love.
Combining her love for everything girly and yet with a sparkly edge for action and whimsical play, the I’m a Superhero costume from the new Choose Your Own Path collection is the perfect touch for my daughter’s superhero adventures.
Comes with an adjustable mask, beautifully crafted cape with Velcro closure, and a tutu skirt with star details – all for $30 with your $175 Matilda Jane purchase or FREE with hosting a Matilda Jane Trunk show! Perfect for Halloween and beyond, this costume is more than just a suit. It’s her identity as a strong little girl, growing up to be an even stronger little woman.
Defines boundaries
Let’s get real for a minute. When my daughter plays superheroes, there’s a tendency for things to escalate quickly. Aggressive violence – yeah, it could happen. But you know what? It allows my girl to explore her boundaries, even with me. Because when things get out of hand, I’m there to ground her back to reality.
Encourages communication
Oh how we want our kids to talk to us more! Being a superhero allows our kids the gift of role play. Acting out both verbal and non-verbal communication, this world of imaginative play allows our kids to express feelings, play out scenarios from their lives and ultimately encourage better conversations with our kids.
Lets them try out a different personality
Shy and timid? Bold and assertive? A little of both? Whether your kid is a leader, a follower or maybe flows between the two, superhero play is good for their souls. Letting our girls play superheroes allows them to try out different personas, strengthen their personality muscles and grow as a little human being.
Connects our kids to kids
Playing superheroes allows my girl to play with other kids and connect with them personally. Maybe not through telepathy, but through cooperation, imagination, productivity, negotiation, compromise, she’s learning how to interact with others. And seriously, what better way to play with other girls and boys, right? It’s pretty super.
Always results in physical activity
You should see her sidekick. It’s pretty darn impressive. When my daughter plays superheroes, you bet there’s going to running, screaming, jumping and some kick-butt action. We want our kids to be active with their play. Superheroes encourage our girls to get physical! *Cue song.
Allows for bigger dreams
Imagine a world where a girl can be her own superhero. She doesn’t need to wait on a prince to rescue her. She has the ability to lead, take control and dream bigger than her cape can follow. A world where there are no limits, because she already broke through those gender stereotypes. She maybe can’t see it now as she soars through the air, but I can. She’s dreaming big because her super powers empower her to.
Why? Because girls CAN
Who rules the world? Girls rule the world. Girls can and will accomplish amazing things in this world, if we only let them. My daughter plays superheroes because she can. No stereotypes or gender roles – just pure play as it should be. And if this superhero wants to wear the frilly tutu with her cape and mask? Let her.
Break down the barriers and open her world to explore the possibilities. Girls can – we as parents need to guide them to a world that’s better and bigger than she can imagine.
My girl CAN because she believes that she is a superhero. And I believe it too. And with her I’m a Superhero costume from Matilda Jane Clothing, she can be that superhero all day, every day and even beyond just Halloween. Help your child dream bigger with the new Matilda Jane Clothing costumes for everyday play and beyond.

This is great! Definitely something that belongs in the “girl toys” aisle. Such a subtle message but powerful
