So I may or may not have packed an oar in our Disney Cruise suitcase…

No big deal.

When my daughter asked begged demanded to have a Moana birthday party, I was already breathing a sigh of relief. Costume – CHECK! But when I looked closer at her top and skirt combo, something was missing. My birthday girl needed a crown. But not just any crown will do for this Disney princess.

Inspired by my daughter’s favorite way finder, we put the crowning touch on her 6th birthday with this Moana Flower Crown DIY. Perfect for a party, costume, Disneybounding or a Disney Cruise photo op (no judgement!).

This beautiful, custom and handmade crown with amazing 3D detail is a lot easier to make than you think. And you might just be able to make it all for little to ZERO cost (like I did!).

The 3D effect of this Moana Flower Crown DIY was well worth the effort. It was the perfect crowning touch for my little Moana birthday girl, and has been used multiple times since. And since I already had all of the materials at home (that crafting mama life!) – the $0 cost didn’t hurt either.

Make your own Moana inspired flower headband with this full DIY and as little as $5:

What You Will Need:

  • Scissors
  • Green Construction Paper
  • Stiff Green Felt – in about 3-4 different green shades
  • Stiff Pink Felt – in 2 different shades
  • Hot Glue – lots of it
  • Jute Twine
  • Tape

Directions:

  1. Start by cutting a green piece of construction paper lengthwise, about 2″ thick. (It’s ok if the paper doesn’t fit entirely around your child’s head. That’s why we have the twine!) Moana craft tutorial
  2. Next cut out long strips of green leaves as shown about 1 1/2 inches long. No need to be exact. Leaves aren’t all the same length. Moana flower crown craft
  3. Glue the ends of the leaves together with hot glue. Allow to dry. This will help with the 3D effect. Moana crown ideas
  4. Hot glue your leaves all over your green construction paper in different directions. Be sure to cover all construction paper areas, occasionally curving the paper to fit around your child’s head. Allow the glue to dry. DIY Moana headband
  5. The flowers were definitely the most difficult part of this DIY. Make sure to cut out the flower petals as shown – the 15 light pink petals (about 1 inch tall) fitting just inside of the 15 dark pink petals (about 1 1/4 inches tall). Moana flower craft
  6. Hot glue the petal ends together (just like the leaves). Moana craft idea
  7. Cut off excess end tips, so just a teeny bit remains glued together. Flower crown tutorial
  8. Use 5 petals to form a flower like shown. Glue together. Repeat for 2 other flowers. Moana crown craft
  9. Glue flowers evenly spaced onto your leaf crown. Moana party hat ideas
  10. Measure your child’s head. Cut and tape 2 pieces twine to the back of your crown. (You may want to hot glue to reinforce.) Moana party crown tutorial
  11. Tie Moana Flower Crown around your child’s head for the perfect Moana inspired headpiece!
