The Visuals/3D
CG-heavy but cool, really cool. That’s how I’d describe the visuals. The whole movie is set out of space, I mean what did you expect? But Marvel certainly stepped up their game – beautiful colors, planets, action sequences…and I even appreciated their more subtle CGI features as well (you’ll see). A highly visual sci-fi film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 equals if not surpasses Guardians 1 in the looks department. Kids will certainly make a good “WOW” face. Points for mom.
***Update: Just saw the movie again in 3D this time. WOW!!! Sci-Fi special effects get a huge thumbs up for me. The graphics are really incredible in 3D and you get a better appreciation for the planet terrain, action sequences and colors. I definitely recommend.
The Storyline…for a Sequel?
I’m putting it on paper (well, rhetorical paper). I loved this movie more than the first movie. I repeat, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is BETTER than Vol. 1. Ok, except the music. I loved the music of the first movie more (but that didn’t keep me from singing and dancing). But what’s the selling point of this sequel? The story. I laughed, hard. I cried, harder. I had all of the feels. Yes, you need to stay until the very last moment of the movie – after all of the credits. In Marvel style, there’s a few end credit spoilers you won’t want to miss.
I promised no spoilers. But obviously, Kurt Russell plays Ego The Living Planet, aka Star-Lord’s dad in the movie. A few Guardians and Peter Quill go off to find out more about Dear Old Dad while Rocket, Groot and a few others end up somewhere else. The family (aka the team) is broken apart as they try to figure out their dynamic and the ultimate question of whether they will stay together and “be loved.” James Gunn‘s words, not mine.
And even better – the characters you love to hate from the first movie find some redemption – some hope. My fave character this movie? Hands down, Yondu. Second favorite? Groot, always Groot. Add an amazing soundtrack (not as a good as Vol. 1 in my opinion, but still pretty darn amazing), and you have a movie that gives you all the feels. And yes, I know it’s a sequel. Sequels are supposed to stink. But as a mom and an emotional mess – this is our movie.
That PG-13 Rating | Safe for Kids?
Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 safe for kids? Kid-friendly? Ok, parents – here’s the deal. That PG-13 rating is going to be a big deal when considering to bring your kids.
In this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m going to breakdown that PG-13 rating for parents. The plot stays pretty true to the original Guardians movie – no overt sexual business, lots of sci-fi action that does involve killing of aliens and intense action sequences. That part doesn’t bother me at all. However…
Violence. Stays true to the Marvel super hero violence we have seen in other Marvel/Disney movies. Intense action, alien deaths, but no overt grotesque, bloody or gory violence.
Language. The Swearing however – there’s a WHOLE lot more of it. Like sailors, from basically the whole cast. I pretty much heard the rainbow of words (minus the F-word), to the point where it almost became a distraction from the storyline. Emphasis on ALMOST.
Adult themes. Then there’s the “birds & the bees” conversation that you may or may not want to have with your kids right now. If you’re totally ok with your kids watching a film filled with curse words and possible how to make babies conversation, then this should be no problem. But I will be waiting to take my 8-year old son and 4-year old daughter to see this one…like maybe a decade.
What Guardians 2 age rating is recommended for kids?
What age should your kids be to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? For teens (mature tweens) and adults, this is a great kick-off to summer movie season. There’s a complete mix of fun, laughs and A LOT of emotions all thrown into one epic saga – perfect for the tweens to adults age. Though a sequel, don’t be fooled. It’s Guardians through and through – but even awesome-er.
Let’s talk about those negative reviews out there too. There’s so many critics that are hating on this movie. Go in with an open mind. Of course, it’s not going to be surprisingly amazing – it’s the same characters, still set in space. It’s a fun kick-off to summer type movie. There’s a bunch of hilarious one-liners, weird moments and emotional tugs – it’s just a good ole movie. So ignore the negative and just enjoy the movie for what it should be – a good movie.
