Fever Facts Most Parents Don’t Know with Braun Thermometers
Once a mama bear always a mama bear, that’s what I always say. While my head may always be a pediatric nurse, my heart will always be a mom first. Maybe it’s because of the day when a visit to a theme park turned into a nightmare.
No thermometer. No medicine. No warning.
A trip to the hospital and some hard parent life lessons left me scarred with fever phobia. Now anytime my kids spike a fever, I get super anxious and worried. In mama bear mode, I’m constantly hovering with a thermometer, fever medicine, liquids and snuggles. But as much as I thought that I knew about treating my children’s sicknesses, I was actually surprised to learn how much I didn’t know (even as a pediatric nurse).
Do you know all of these fever facts?
5 Fever Facts Most Parents Don’t Know
Myth: The most accurate temperature check is rectally.
Nope. The ear canal is the best site to measure a fever, due to its close proximity to the eardrum, which shares the blood supply of the brain’s temperature control center. In a recent survey, only 12% of moms knew this.
Myth: All fevers should be treated with fever medicine.
Untrue. Most fevers indicate that your child’s immune system is strong and working to heal your child faster. Children are generally safe at temperatures that kill many viruses and bacteria.
Myth: It’s important to wake my children in the middle of the night when they have a fever.
While tracking temperatures at night time is an important part of care giving for your child, so is giving them the rest they need to fight their sickness.
Myth: Fevers can give my child brain damage.
Fevers can be extremely scary (remember my theme park nightmare?), but most fevers are not dangerous or cause brain damage.
Myth: The back of my hand on my child’s forehead is an accurate way to measure for fever.
While you may be able to feel some warmth by using the back of your hand, it’s not the best indicator for fevers. In fact, my mother told me that my forehead was NEVER warm when I had a fever as a child. The best way to accurately take your child’s temperature is with a thermometer you trust to provide professional accuracy, gentle convenience and peace of mind when you need it most.

Untrue, I was getting temp. readings of 105.3 which sent me to the ER. When I got there my temp. was only 101.6. This inaccurate reading cost me thousands of dollars. I took my reading several time with the same result before I went to ER. I am on immunosuppressive drugs and rely on this accuracy to keep me alive.
