Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever Review | Safe for Kids? Parents Guide to Disney+ Original Movie
And the wimpiest Christmas movie goes to…
Or does it? The popular Jeff Kinney children’s book series is back in yet another animated sequel – but this time, make it Christmas. But does Greg Heffley and his Diary of a Wimpy Kid family earn a seat at our Christmas table this holiday season? Or will families be giving this wimpy kid a bah-humbug?
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever Review | Safe for Kids?, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story, a full PG age rating explanation for violence, adult themes and language, and what kids’ age recommendation is suggested to watch in this new Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie parents guide to the new Disney+ original film. A no-spoiler parent review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever, have we had enough of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid antics? Or should families welcome in this new classic Disney+ original film?
The Visuals
Visually, it’s about what you would expect from a Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated movie. If you’ve seen the Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2021 animation and/or the 2022 Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules sequel remake, then you’ll already know that this film is just one step up from the Jeff Kinney stick figure drawings.
With a simple and low-budget animation style, this Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas 2023 film won’t blow you away with technologically savvy CGI effects. But with bright colors and bubbly visuals, kids will cling to this old-school animation style.
Photosensitivity Warning. For viewers prone to epilepsy and photosensitivity, the last scene of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever 2023 film does feature a series of quick lightning flashes of bright lights. This is the only strobing effects seen in the movie.
The Story
Based on the popular children’s book series by Jeff Kinney, 2023 Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever movie is directed by Luke Cormican (“Teen Titans Go!“) and written and produced by Jeff Kinney. The all-new 2023 Diary of a Wimpy Kid holiday film streaming on Disney+ features the voices of Wesley Kimmel (“The Mandalorian”) as Greg Heffley, Spencer Howell (“Ithaca”) as best friend Rowley Jefferson, Chris Diamantopoulos (“Silicon Valley“) as dad Frank Heffley, Erica Cerra ( Saban’s “Power Rangers”) as mom Susan Heffley, and Hunter Dillon (“Deadpool 2”) as brother Rodrick Heffley.
This Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 animated holiday movie continues to follow the adventures Greg Heffley and his family during the Christmas season. With wild antics, action, adventure and a little holiday humor, audiences will appreciate the “somewhat” innocent scrapes Greg gets himself into, while also digging into a few important life lessons along the way.
The story is simple and predictable, but not too over-the-top – with just enough laughs to keep the audience entertained. But does Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever have too much rude humor for this Christmas season?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever PG Rating Explained
Is Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever safe for kids? Another Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie that’s rated PG? Should parents be concerned this holiday season? It’s no secret that I am highly skeptical of all MPAA ratings (um hello, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker not disclosing any language??). And as we know, not all movie and TV age ratings are the same. As a parent, it’s been rather heartbreaking to witness how ratings have shifted over the years with a G-rating no longer an option.
PG ratings now oscillating between Turning Red intense to Christopher Robin calm, and even PG-13/TV-14 age ratings teetering on the edge of R or MA ratings (Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night, I see you!), there’s a wide range between the age of 0-14 years old for parents to consider. Having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or show is kid friendly – and safe for the whole family to watch together.
Why is Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever rated PG? In this Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever Review | Safe for Kids?, this all-new Disney+ original Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie is rated PG for “mild rude humor.” With film and TV ratings also unpredictable these days, having fully disclosed parent guidelines can help determine if a movie or television show like Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever is kid friendly.
Is Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever too crude for kids? Let’s breakdown that PG age rating in this Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever parents guide.
Violence/Suspense. The action and adventure is what you would expect from a Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated movie (emphasis on ANIMATED). The more recent films tone down the mayhem and antics expected of the older live action films, with more “innocent” mishaps for a tween kid than all-out Meet the Fockers moments.
There is mild sibling fighting (including shoving and light punches) along with mild mayhem, bullying, and property damage. There is also one inferred verbal reference to cannibalism and to being a “dictator.” A few scenes with a “creepy doll” may also be nightmare territory for littles.
Adult Themes. Expect some familiar Greg antics in this Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie. While mostly mild innocent scrapes in nature, there is some property damage, multiple references to jail, cops, and being arrested.
Gross humor includes one visual of a child picking his nose, one visual of candy canes up a kid’s nose, and visual boogers present. Toilet humor includes multiple scenes with a toilet visible, references to a stinky bathroom, “not flushing,” pouring objects into a toddler sized potty, and visual and verbal reference to underwear (not on a person, but in hand). Overall, very mild from what I would expect of a Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie.
Language. Thankfully, this Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas movie does NOT have any swear words or foul language to report. There are a few mild insults and bad language phrases including “twerps,” “dumb,” “heck,” and “oh gosh.” One verbal reference to humans eating humans and “dictator” stated above. But again, overall I’m very happy to hear that this Disney+ film keeps the language in the Christmas spirit category.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever Age Rating for Kids
With a short runtime of 1 hour 3 minutes, this relatively short Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 holiday film is perfect for streaming on a cold, snowy day – without being too long for wiggle worms (and let’s face it, adults too).
With familiar animation and character styling to the 2021 and 2022 Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, action, adventure, and antics to keep little children entertained, this rather short and sweet Christmas themed film has enough laughs and life lessons for the whole family this holiday season.
The all-new Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie on Disney+ is most comparable to the more recent animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, including Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2021 and Rodrick Rules.
This all-new Disney+ original Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas 2023 movie is rated PG for “mild rude humor” by the MPAA.
No, there is no end credit scenes in the new 2023 Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie.
Based on my Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever parents guide and mom review above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie to kids younger than the age of 5 years old.
Considering the full PG age rating breakdown above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever to kids younger than the age of 5 years old. This Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever PG rating is pretty spot on and easily comparable to The Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2021 and Rodrick Rules 2022 animated film ratings.
While not as crude humor as the live action Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie series (2010, 2011, and 2012), I still recommend parents to prescreen Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2023 movie for mild toilet humor and mild kid induced mayhem.
The Overall
Overall, this new Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever 2023 feels more like a low-budget holiday special than a full fledged branded film. With a short 1 hour-ish runtime, this is a quick new Christmas film that families can stream while getting into the Christmas spirit, without being another over-the-top “Meet the Parents.”
Thankfully this holiday adventure puts aside much of the snark and crude humor for a more palatable family movie night. Not as crude as the old live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, this animated version keeps things short, with enough laughs and life lessons to be moderately entertaining, even for a mom who despises these kinds of “everything goes wrong” types of film. But let’s be real, this Disney+ original doesn’t even compare to the classics like Elf, A Christmas Story, or Charlie Brown’s Christmas.
