You’ve heard of Tangled. You’ve even heard of Tangled Ever After. But what the heck is Tangled Before Ever After? If you’re wondering if this movie lives up to the Tangled hype, this is NOT the “7 am the usual morning line-up.” I have 8 reasons why you can’t miss this new Disney Channel original movie.

Find Out What Happens Between the Kisses

You know the story. Hair gets cut off, Rapunzel saves the day – ends with a kiss. Then wedding day arrives, chaos ensues – ends with a kiss. But what happens between the two kisses? Chris Sonnenburg explains how this created Tangled Ever After and Tangled the Series.

Just looking at the story, there was this moment at the end of the movie where they meet and they fall in love. There’s this great line at the end of the movie where Eugene Fitzherbert, says “after years and years of asking and asking I finally said yes.” Then there’s the short, Tangled: Ever After, where they get married. Just looking at the two of those moments I was wondering, what happened in between that time?

Tangled Before Ever After helps to answer that burning Tangled question we all have. Set in the castle at Corona, we follow the continuing relationship between Rapunzel and her parents, Rapunzel and Eugene and Rapunzel and herself as a teenager struggling with finding her place in this world.

Because the Hair Grows Back

Rapunzel isn’t Rapunzel without her hair according to Chris Sonnenburg. I couldn’t agree more. That’s right, Rapunzel’s long flowing hair isn’t just an accessory. Rapunzel’s hair is a unique and important character in Tangled Before Ever After. But then the question – well how does the long hair weave back into the story? Tangled – long hair for most of the movie, but chopped at the end. Tangled Ever After – short hair. Um…what? So how does the hair grow back and get cut off yet again?

Ultimately her name’s Rapunzel, right? Long blonde hair. If you’re going to tell a story about the Hulk you’re not going to tell like about a dog. He’s got to be big and green. And I think Rapunzel has to be long blonde hair for it to kind of just read as the character. Her hair represents her personality. It’s bigger than life. It’s bright. It’s long. It shines. It’s magical. It’s pretty much who Rapunzel is. But really for me the trick about it and what ultimately was the trick for the filmmakers in the original movie was to give the hair a reason for being blonde and for being long and in our case, being uncuttable.

Mandy Moore & Zachary Levi Return As Your Favorite Tangled Couple

I couldn’t imagine another voice for Tangled. Mandy Moore comes back to reprise her role as Rapunzel on Tangled Ever After and it’s magical. Same personality. Same free spirit. Same quirky teenage girl trying to comb her way through the world. (Comb – get it? Bad hair pun, I know.) And Rapunzel isn’t the only character making a comeback.

The humor is not the same without the smooth, suave, and totally egotistical voice of Flynn Rider. I mean, you can’t be in a boat singing the hit song “I See the Light” without this guy, am I right? Zachary Levi also returns as Eugene Fitzherbert. I’m so happy to see this Disney couple back together again in Tangled Before Ever After – because it’s so fantastical with the pair of them. Yes, yes it is.

Plus Est En Vous

“There is more in you.” Tangled Before Ever After and Tangled: The Series definitely has a huge heart and a huge theme throughout the season. And everything will circle back to the phrase “Plus est en vous.” This phrase is written inside of a journal that Queen Arianna (Easter Egg – that’s Chris Sonnenburg’s daughter’s name) gives to Rapunzel to document her adventures. That journal will play a big role in Rapunzel’s life as she documents her teenage years in Corona. Chris Sonnenburg explains why this phrase is so important not just to the show, but to him.

Right when we were breaking the story, [my older daughter Arianna] had gone on this trip to Mexico with a huge group of people to build houses for kids in Mexico. She had just turned 14, and she was going on this big trip. I didn’t know if she was ready for it. I didn’t know if I was ready for it. My wife and I would [ask] is she old enough to go by herself? And there seem to be this questioning of “Is she prepared for this? She’s our little baby. Is she ready for this life of traveling beyond the borders and all this huge life excitement?’ They had given her these journals to take notes and get to know people. And when she had come back the little journal was completely covered in drawings of the little girls that she met and how she learned how to put a hinge on a door and she learned how to do all this fun stuff and she dropped her phone in water and…She kept all these drawings of her journey. And I was like that’s what Rapunzel would do.

Then the added element of the inscription came very much from the movie. Glenn Keane who created the character of Rapunzel for the film, had come and I was talking to him about what we wanted to do with the show and he had done this quick drawing for me – that’s going to encourage me years as we go into the show.  And he had done this picture, this beautiful drawing of Rapunzel and on it he wrote, ‘Plus est en vous,’ and I was like what is that? In the movie, we had this phrase that we were using just in the story rooms. At the end of the movie all of her magic is gone but she squeezes out one last drop of magic out of her. And he said the meaning behind that is that we all have more in us, that we can push through it. When you feel like you’re at the end of your ropes, if you can’t give any more, push through and there’s always more inside of you. And I thought that was such a beautiful sentiment.

The phrase means there’s more in everybody. There’s more inside of Eugene. There’s more inside of Pascal. There’s more inside of Corona than everybody just sees on the surface. As we go into the season, there’s even tunnels underneath Corona. And even the tunnels have that thing; there’s more in Corona. We try and put that [phrase] into every aspect.

New Loveable Tangled Inspired Songs

I can belt “I See The Light” with the best of them. Tangled was one of those movies where I instantly fell in love with the soundtrack. And with a new Tangled movie and series, we all wanted to know if music was still going to play a big role in the continuation. We were right.

We knew our access to Alan Menken was going to be limited and we really wanted to keep the music special. I wanted it to be used where the characters have something to say and have something on their heart that is going to change their viewpoint on the world. And so those big moments lined up with what we’re calling our tent poles. We have three big tent poles per season. We have a season premiere, a midseason and a season finale. And those are the places where we really have the big musical moments where huge things happen. The music is awesome and there’s more music to come and it is epic and big and special and people are definitely going to want it.

‘The Wind in My Hair’ is one of my instant favorites already from Tangled Before Ever After. I can’t wait to see what other musical number will be added throughout the season.

New Characters & Backstory

Thought Mother Gothel was creepy? Well there’s new characters in Corona! There’s a new villain in Corona, Lady Cane, with a hurt backstory and a tough looking tattoo. Rapunzel’s Lady in Waiting, Cassandra, will play an important role in Rapunzel’s life as well. A rigid, militaristic woman who’s dad is captain of the guard, also is adventurous and a confidant for our heroine.

Rapunzel [is] always so optimistic and so cheerful and so full of wonder and everything she meets. It’s great to have the opposite view, just a little more sarcastic and a little more down to earth and you get that different take on the same topic. It just makes for a really great storytelling.

And just as exciting is the reveal of more backstory for our known characters as well. Not only for Rapunzel and Eugene, but we will also learn more about Pascal, Maximus, The King and Queen.

Starting March 24th at 7:30 pm ET, Tangled: The Series comes to Disney Channel with a whole season of adventures, life discoveries and lots of insight to your favorite Tangled characters.
