Easy No Sew TuTu DIY

Finally having a little girl of my own, one of the BEST parts is being able to dress her up. But being on a budget doesn’t always give me the luxury to go and buy every cute outfit in the world. Staying crafty and frugal certainly helps in this realm. As we closed in on my girl’s first birthday, I knew I had to have one of those adorable tu-tus for her 1 year pictures. Determined, I was going to make one myself…and of course share with you how you can make one. Grab this Easy No Sew Tutu DIY, and make an adorable skirt for as low as $5 🙂

What You Will Need:

• Girl’s Headband (see sizing chart below) – I got one for about $1 at Target
• (3) 6 inch rolls of Tulle (usually found in the wedding section of the craft store) – about 20-25 yards per roll. I use 3 coordinating colors (dark purple, light purple and white) for contrast – about $1.20 per roll when you use 40% off 1 regular item coupons at craft stores
• Scissors
• An Old Carboard Box (you’ll see why)
• A measuring tape

Directions:

The first thing I had to figure out was sizing. This was a little difficult since there were not many places out there to find headband sizing for a tu-tu. So of course being the Type A person I am, I made you one 🙂

So my girl was turning 1, so I grabbed a girl’s age 3 headband. The next part is cutting the strips. Since I recommend using 3 different rolls of tulle (adds awesome poofy factor), you are going to need lots and lots of strips of tulle. The easiest way to cut is by having a helper….aka the Cardboard box.

Size your cardboard box to be HALF the length of your tutu strips. For example, since my strips were to be about 16 inches long, I cut my box to be 8 inches wide. Wrap your tulle (about 30 times for Age 1-2 tutu) around the cardboard starting at one end of the cardboard, keeping track which end your first started wrapping. Cut the tulle at the end you first started wrapping, like the pic above. Do separately for each color so you can pile each for quick grabbing.

Ok, here’s the fun part. You’re going to do a series of slip knots to wrap your tulle around your headband. Keeping in mind that elastic stretches, you do NOT want to tie the knot very tight at all. Keep it loose while you figure out how many strips you would like around. Again, I used about 30 knots, but every headband is different.

So, grabbing your 3 different strips of color, make a loop in the middle, inside your headband. Take the ends and fold up around the headband and through your loop. Pull through. SIMPLE! For contrast, have fun changing the color order you grab for wrapping. This gives nice depth to your tutu.

When the whole tutu is complete, go back and readjust, tighten any knots you want and add more strips if needed. Then “fluff” your tutu to give it the awesome POOFY factor.

I can’t wait for her to wear this tutu to the mall, grocery store and play time. It’s amazing to watch your little girl grow! Great idea for a little girl’s costume, Disney party, and more!
