Why Play Matters | I’m a 2015 Step2 Ambassador
Play. It’s just a small 4-letter word. But have you ever taken the moment to dissect it’s meaning and purpose? It’s actually been on my mind quite a bit this 2015. So I’m getting to the root of childhood today and discovering 5 reasons why play matters to our kids.
1. Encourages Learning
Learning through play, I see it everyday. Colors, letters, sounds, fine motor skills, and some of the most important life skills are taking place right now, through play. Healthy, active and forward-thinking, play encourages learning at the BEST possible level for kids. And play can encourage learning all the way into adulthood!
2. Builds Relationships
There’s a reason why we were always told to play nice with others. Building relationships with family, friends, strangers, community and the world can happen here with play. Tearing down the walls of isolation and exclusion, play can build positive, healthy and long-lasting relationships.
3. Instills Self-Confidence
Have you ever seen that light bulb go off on your child’s face? There’s seriously no heartwarming moment that watching your child “get it” for the first time. Self-confidence. It’s an amazing attribute, and it’s something that can be easily fostered through play.
4. Stirs Creativity and Imagination
Are you cooking up a chip, grape and pickle pizza today? Because we certainly are! Playtime is the foundation for creativity and imagination.
5. Because It’s FUN!
Kids, they just want to have fun! Playtime is definitely one of those magic words that has my kids smiling from ear to ear every time. Why does play matter? Because Play and Fun are the heart of childhood.
Play is such an important part of my children’s lives. As I focus more on family this 2015, I am constantly reminded why play matters. My beautiful 2-year old girl is at the perfect age for soaking in the best that play time has to offer. That’s why I’m so excited to announce that I am a 2015 Step2 Ambassador! I’ve been chosen as 1 of 10 bloggers to represent PLAY! This year I will be working closely with The Step2 Company, one of the largest and BEST toddler toy companies in the U.S. as I share our family moments, play with our favorite toys, host fun giveaways, even head to the Step2 Headquarters this summer to get a peek behind the magic. This is such a rare and wonderful opportunity for my family as we learn and grow together. Making play a part of our family focus for 2015 has never been more exciting! And I’m so glad to be a part of the 2015 Step2 Ambassador family. So stay tuned for more discovery, learning and FUN at Saving Said Simply for 2015.

Congrats on your new ambassadorship. We have a few Step2 toys and my boys play with them often. I think play is important because it lets them use their imaginations, and burn off all the energy they wake up with every day!

I couldn’t agree more with the entire post. I was just hearing on the news this morning how many schools across the country are removing recess from the school-day. What?! This just doesn’t make any sense to me. Play time is so important for SO many reasons as you’ve mentioned here! Congrats on the ambassadorship too! Woohoo!!

Free play time is so important for kids. My kids used to have a big play kitchen when they were little. They loved to pretend to do kitchen stuff.

It is hard to imagine how it is for children who have no play, either because they are expected to work, or where they are begging for food and the most meager sustenance. Not having play makes life harsh from the beginning.
