My Movie Bucket List | 50 Must See Movies In Your Lifetime

It’s the same conversation every time.

“Have you seen this movie?”

“Nope.”

“What?! How could you not have seen this movie? Everyone has seen it!”

In light of yet another sad “I-have-not-seen-that-movie” revelation this summer, I have come to the conclusion that I need to invoke a different response. Hence the creation of my movie bucket list and summer challenge. Come shake your head at me as I meekly reveal all of the movies that everyone else in the world has seen but me, and how I plan to remedy the situation with the 50 Must See Movies In Your Lifetime.

The perfect movie bucket list for the summer, these classic must-see films need to be on your list pronto.

Making A Movie Bucket List

Maybe it was a sheltered home life. Maybe I was too busy in college. Maybe I didn’t get a real LOVE for movies until I became a blogger that blogged about movies.

But here I am today, finally talking about all of the sad instances where I have yet again missed another classic, all-time-favorite or any other movie that everyone has to see in their lifetime. I hang my head in shame as I admit that I only have seen It’s a Wonderful Life this past year.

And with summer here and my love for a good challenge, I couldn’t help but create my movie bucket list. I’m sure this will keep changing and evolving (hoping my fans will keep me up to date on new movies I must see), but the end result is the same.

To finally say “Yes, I have now seen that movie.”

This post actually came about from a conversation with my husband and brother-in-law. Trying to pick a movie to watch for the 2 couples while our kids were busy taking advantage of summer, we went down yet another path of “Christie hasn’t seen this movie. We have to see it.” So I sat down and wrote out a list (with the help of IMDB, AFI, Rotten Tomatoes and family members) to create this ultimate of ultimates, my movie bucket list.

Then I gave myself a challenge. I will watch at least 10 of these movies by the end of the summer. An obtainable goal, if I do say so myself. And with motivation in my pocket, I sat down and finally watched one of the greatest movies of all time. Can you guess which one?

Also, be kind. This best movie bucket list was made back in 2015. Obviously many more great films have been produced since that time. Maybe to update and make a new movie bucket list.

50 Must See Movies in Your Lifetime

  1. Shawshank Redemption – finished as of 6/7. My first movie of the summer and a GOOD one! Loved it!
  2. Field of Dreams – finished as of 6/11. Ok, this movie left me with more questions than answers. I get the dad connection thing. But saving the farm? Talking to dead people? Joy riding with James Earl Jones? Definitely an “interesting” movie.
  3. The Godfather
  4. Any of the Rocky Movies
  5. Casablanca
  6. Gone with the Wind
  7. Citizen Kane
  8. Disney’s Up
  9. Lawrence of Arabia
  10. Raging Bull
  11. Pulp Fiction – I understand the artistry of this film now and why it was genius filmmaking of it’s time. Plus the cast, WOW.
  12. Rain Man
  13. Alien – though I highly doubt I will ever have the guts to see this one!
  14. Monty Python & The Holy Grail
  15. 2001 Space Odyssey
  16. Scarface
  17. The Labyrinth
  18. Cool Hand Luke
  19. Fargo
  20. Million Dollar Baby
  21. The Grapes of Wrath
  22. Unforgiven
  23. Jaws
  24. To Kill a Mockingbird
  25. The Graduate
  26. Dances with Wolves
  27. The Maltese Falcon
  28. Rear Window
  29. The French Connection
  30. Inception
  31. The Usual Suspects
  32. The King’s Speech
  33. Terms of Endearment
  34. American Grafitti
  35. The Color Purple
  36. Interstellar – sadly my husband rented and saw this movie…I fell asleep. Sigh, try again!
  37. Goodfellas
  38. Slumdog Millionaire
  39. The Hurt Locker
  40. L.A. Confidential
  41. Blade Runner
  42. Awakenings
  43. 12 Monkeys
  44. Driving Miss Daisy
  45. Dr. Stranglove, Or How I Stopped Worrying and Love the Bomb
  46. Philadelphia
  47. Dr. Zhivago
  48. A League of Their Own – I swear that my husband coerced this list to include more baseball movies than necessary. Though I’ll admit that I couldn’t believe that the nasty bruise was real!
  49. Caddyshack
  50. Ghost

Ok, summer! Bring on the movies!

So after you give me a finger point, head shake, and give me my overdue “I can’t believe she hasn’t seen these movies” talk, what movie would you add to my movie bucket list? Which ones do you dislike? What is one of your favorite movies of all time?

I’m looking forward to the controversy and discussion 🙂

I need to start a summer movie bucket list after seeing this. You have a lot of good ones listed. Some classic ones that are not to watch again and again.

Good list. I have seen most of these. No real desire to see Terms of Endearment, but that’s a me issue. I would skip the first Alien movie and watch the 2nd one, Aliens. Not on your list but highly recommended: The Third Man, The Longest Day (Or Saving Private Ryan), The 5th Element.

some more to add would be, more of Quentin Tarantino’s films: Kill Bill 1 and 2, Django: Unchained, and Inglourious Basterds. More of my favorites include: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind because Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet play opposite roles than they usually play in popular movies and they totally nail the part, I Origins because the debate on religion is still very much alive and, so this movie is based around the quote “the eyes are the window to soul” and it’s just an interesting way to look at it, and finally Whiplash, because J.K. Simmons is hilarious in this film and the movie portrays trying to make it in the music industry perfectly, with the hard ass conductor as the music industry and the drummer as the kid trying to be great.

To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite movie. I don’t watch many movies more than once, but I bet I’ve watched this 100 times or more. So good! Trading Places with Eddie Murphy & Dan Aykroyd is one of my favorite comedies.
