Overcoming personal insecurities to play Drax, it’s not something I’d expect in this heartwarming Dave Bautista Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Interview. This post is sponsored by Disney. All galactic opinions are my own

Every time I sit down with Dave Bautista, I love him so much more. And this time, this big, burly can-crush-me-with-a-flick guy really pulled hard at my heartstrings in this exclusive Dave Bautista Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Interview. I finally realized why I love talking with this guy, now for the third time. He’s me. Dave Bautista represents the insecurities we all have – but he makes them publicly known. His bravery, his struggles, his humbleness and his perseverance to overcome his personal demons makes him one of my favorite actors out there – and Drax one of my favorite characters in this Guardians sequel.
Find out what really lies underneath this rough & tough ex-wrestler exterior and what obstacles he had to overcome to be Drax, again.
He didn’t like the script, or his lines
While Chris Pratt raved about the Guardians 2 script, Dave Bautista was very honest about his first opinion.
When I first read the script, I wasn’t crazy about it. When I usually get a script I go over my dialogue first. So, I read over my dialogue and for one I was expecting them to go a different direction with Drax. I thought he was gonna be more of the destroyer. I thought he was gonna be a more comic book Drax and then I realized they were digging more into the funny bits. I don’t find myself funny at all, so when I was reading these lines I was like they’re not funny. And I just didn’t really get them. I read the script, and I thought, wow, this is really a great script. It’s deep. It’s emotional, but I still was a little bit disappointed about my part. And then the first day we did our table read, I realized it was hysterical. And then I just had a completely different outlook on it as a whole.
Now, I like it better than the first film. It’s weird. It’s one of those things I feel like the more and more we get into the film, the more I am sucked into it. There’s certain beats I just sniffle up. I just get so emotionally invested in this film. I felt that the first one I thought was fun and exciting and some parts were very emotional, but not like this one. I was just totally absorbed in this film.
His own worst critic
I was reminded how much movie stars are just people, everyday people when I heard him talk about watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the premiere.
As far as watching me on film, I just cringe. I just don’t like watching myself on film. It’s just uncomfortable. At the premiere, every time I was on the screen like and I knew I was gonna say something, I just kinda put my head down and just try to get through it. I’m still judging myself.
The real reason he stays in shape
Bigger muscles? Nope, not even close.
I think people expect me to have a certain personality because of the way I look. I always tell people I look the way I do because of the personality that I have. The only place I ever felt comfortable was working out. I just felt like I was a fish put back in water. I felt like I could just do this. It just made me feel good. It made me feel more confident, and that’s why I look the way I do. It’s because of my self-consciousness on the inside, not because I had this personality where I feel like I have to be the biggest guy in the room. It’s a life commitment for me.
F-A-M-I-L-Y, find out what it means to me
Love and acceptance, it’s everything we could hope for from our family. Thankfully, Dave Bautista has found huge support for his personal struggles in his Guardians family.
We got really close in the first film. We’ve spent so much time together on press tours. And now we’ve actually done like three films together as the Guardians: Guardians 1 and 2 and gone on to the Avengers. So, we’ve spent a lot of time together. They knew I was a little awkward and they accept that about me. They don’t judge me for it and I know they’re not going to. Sometimes I still get inside my head and self-conscious about it. Even Zoe knows that I have ADD and I zone off quite a bit. But I know at the end of the day, they know.
Overcoming Himself to Pursue His Dreams
Dave Bautista won’t let his personal struggles stop him from reaching his dreams. And I think that’s the biggest takeaway from this interview. He’s doing what he loves, even when it’s scary.
All this attention and the spotlight [are] very uncomfortable for me. Nobody really gets it. When we’re walking like down the red carpet and they’re saying, “Oh, this is great.” I’m like for me it’s not. I enjoy it. I don’t hate it, but at the same time it’s just overwhelming for me. And I think a lot of people have a hard time relating why that would be overwhelming, especially when they look at what I’ve done for a living with wrestling and being out there in the spotlight. I did it, ’cause I love it. I was passionate about it. That doesn’t mean I was always super comfortable. I did it because I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and pursue my dreams, which is terrifying.
I love that Dave Bautista has taken on the character of Drax, almost completely OPPOSITE of his real personality. It’s a true testament to his ambitions, goals and personal struggles that he continues to battle everyday of his life. Drax, the literal, honest, loud, boisterious and hilarious Guardians character you know and love returns to the big screen. I have a much deeper respect for the quiet man behind the tattoos. And I could seriously watch Drax one-liners all day. Drax still has the best one-liners as he returns in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!
