Cold and flu must haves for kids

6 Cold & Flu Must-Haves for Kids + Maty’s Healthy Products

Cough. Sneeze. Wipe. Repeat. The cycle of cold and flu season has definitely arrived in this home. And who suffers the worst? My kids. As a pediatric nurse and a mom of 2, I can totally feel your pain when cold & flu season comes around again. But having a few years of parenting and nursing under the belt, I’m sharing my top 6 Cold & Flu Must-Haves for Kids that you should already have in your home. Right now. Do you have all of these cold and flu essentials? Check out the list and be sure to scroll down for a giveaway!

Thermometer

Have you checked the batteries in yours lately? Thermometers are such good tools to use when kids are sick with the cold or flu because their fevers can shoot up very, very quickly. From happy smiling kid to very quiet and lethargic, fevers are a quick indicator that something is wrong. And while we often first use our hands to test, the feel test can be hard to judge. Just ask my mom. I always had a fever without feeling warm on my forehead. So keep that thermometer close by and handy this season. If possible, keep more than one on hand in case a battery gives out.

Hydration

As parents, I’m sure we could buy stock in juice. There’s probably lots in the house. But the hydration I’m talking about is more dedicated to a sick child that possibly has been vomiting. With cold and flu can come a big mess for mommy and daddy to clean up. And with small bodies and quick loss of fluids, having proper hydration filled with electrolytes is so important to replenish lost nutrients. Have hydration close at hand this season.

Saline

NOT for hydration. Saline is one of my FAVORITE cold and flu tools that parents can use for little noses. Little passageways for breathing can quickly become clogged with boogies. And trying to get a sick child to blow their nose? The struggle is real. Saline is a gentle and effective way to clean noses of germs and boogies and keep inflammation down. Having a hard time to get your child to sit still while administering the drops or spray? If you have a nebulizer at home, you can place the mist in front of their faces to help them to inhale (a little nurse-parent trick!).

Tissues

They always seem to be missing when cold and flu season is here, right? Get a stock up on tissues for the family this season! I try to keep a box in every room of the house for easier convenience (so I don’t find boogies on sleeves, yuck!). And those soft/wet wipes are genius for little noses. No one likes a raw nose!

Sanitizer

Your kids are going to forget or be too sick to get up and wash their hands. And who’s going to end up sick? The parents. Practice good hand hygiene with your little ones, especially between nose wipes to keep the germs from spreading to the rest of the household!

Natural cold and flu remedies for kids

Natural Cold & Flu Remedies

As a nurse, I relied heavily on medicines to help kids in the hospital feel better. Now as a mom, I worry about side effects these medicines can have on my kids. So small and so quick to get adverse reactions (especially my poor allergic prone boy), I definitely rely on natural remedies to treat my children’s sicknesses like cold and flu at home. Maty’s Healthy Products is a company dedicated to natural remedies for kids. Made by a mom who was looking for natural health remedies for her daughter born with heart defects, these natural products combine modern knowledge to age-old remedies.

Snuggles & Lovies

It’s so tough to be sick when you’re little. And that’s the time when kids need their parents the most. Those sick hugs and snuggles with their blankies and stuffed friends can make all of the difference in getting better soon. Don’t forget the parents’ healing power of loving on your sick kids!
