Three times the charm. I always feel like I’m sitting down to family dinner every time I step into the same room as Chris Pratt . He’s 100% as you would expect in an interview – engaging, heartfelt, and certainly entertaining. Oh and did I mention he’s not bad eye candy either? But this Chris Pratt Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Interview brings all of the feels as we learn so much more about the man behind the character.
Check out Chris’ favorite Guardians 2 Easter Egg, his real thoughts on making a Guardians sequel, who he’s fan-girling over and how he manages it all as a busy father. Oh, and we talk about Star-Lord, or something like that.
The Real Sequel Feels
Can sequels really be better than the originals? I mean c’mon! Chris Pratt was certainly one of those people holding his breath waiting for this movie to unravel. He told us how he really felt about making a Guardians 2 movie.
Just a few weeks after the first movie came out, James Gunn invited me to his house and told me the whole movie. I was the first person to hear it. I’m crying at the end. And he’s like, “So, what do you think? Would you?” ‘Cause he was asking if I was willing to go there, you know? I’m like “Are you crazy? Yes please, it’s amazing!” When I read the script, I knew it was good. But there’s so much stuff that can happen between reading the script and watching the movie. There’s so many moving parts, some of which I’m responsible for. So I was like – please still be good. I was relieved to see that the movie was as good as the script.
Taking Peter Quill to the Next Level
This sequel really takes us further into Star-Lord’s character and history – which meant a lot of focus on Chris Pratt’s part. Delving his character into deeper emotional realms is really the cornerstone of this movie.
The concept was mind blowing. It was next level to me. Understanding the nuances was way different from the first movie. There were certain emotional tones in the first movie with Peter Quill with his mother and that side of his origin. But this new story, [we’re] feeling the reality of his biological father, and this guy that he’s built up in his mind. It’s a very contemporary story. There’s a lot of kids whose dads weren’t around that are going to relate to that. And who have another man in their life who’s been responsible for raising them. And possibly how we take relationships for granted that aren’t the relationships we have built up in our mind.
Channeling Anger?
And speaking of emotions, anger is not one of Chris Pratt’s strong suits. As a pretty happy go-lucky kind of guy, channeling his anger had to come from a much, much different place.
As an actor, one of the hardest things for me to do is channel anger. I do it so rarely in my real life. It was hard for me to get there. When you can’t use the natural empathy for your character that you’re playing, you have to have empathy FOR them. Then you feel their emotions. If that doesn’t work, you have to rely on some tricks to work rather from the inside out, but from the outside in.
That’s what I had to do. It was actually not as emotional for me as it was practical. Like creating a center, creating a loud voice. James really helped me with that. It’s about energy, heightening your energy, grounding it, and being direct. That’s something that doesn’t come that natural to me.
Even Stars Have “Fan-Girl” Moments
I laughed so hard when Chris Pratt described his first time meeting with Kurt Russell – because in that moment, Chris represented all of us fan-girls.
Obviously he’s this iconic dude who I’ve known about for decades before he ever knew I existed. There’s always that strange moment when you meet someone and you’re a big fan. You feel like you have to tell him, because otherwise you try to build a friendship and it’s a little inauthentic. You just say, “Listen, I have to get this part out of the way. I love you so much! You’re the best! You’ve always been the best!” And he says, “Yeah, I know. Thanks.” And…alright! Let’s get to it! We share a lot of the same passions. He’s a really cool guy. He’s an open book. You definitely know where you stand with him. He tells it like it is. I really like that.
A Tasty Guardians 2 Easter Egg
Vol. 2 is the perfect movie to hide a few little nods to the original. And Chris Pratt reveals a little Easter Egg that everyone will be able to find in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s right on his shirt.
Peter Quill’s shirt in the movie, that’s actually a label from the first movie. There was some candy on the table and I’m eating some of the candy. I don’t know if that ever made it in the movie, but James really loved the label. The art department had gone the lengths of creating this language and created a label for the candy. So, James put that label on the shirt.
Chris Pratt the Father & Balancing It All
There are times when I forget that Chris Pratt is just a guy, human. And underneath of all of the layers and success, he’s just a parent trying to figure out how to do life. How does Chris balance fatherhood, marriage and busy career? He offers some of the best advice for us as parents.
It’s really a lot of communication. If I did all the administration in my life, I’d never have time to do anything. It’s like I told my publicist, I’m like a parcel. I don’t even travel. I just get shipped everywhere. So, I don’t do any of that stuff. I just focus on what I can do. You don’t have to be present to be a presence. And with technology now, it’s little tricks, little things like that. Checking in every day and nurturing your relationship with your spouse, and not making it just about the kids is important. Prioritize. Make lists. You’re probably going to fail some of the time. Just do your best.
