Aw, COCONUTS!

So remember that 6-year old birthday party that happened about 6 months ago? Yeah, I know. Mom life. (Don’t even get me started on my son’s Harry Potter Birthday Party – I’m over a year ago on that one.) But in the midst of unpacking boxes and trying to redefine “normalcy” in our new house, I keep coming back to old party pictures.

In case you didn’t know, party planning is my happy place. Whether it’s a Pixar Up Party or Tangled Party (or if you’ve been around awhile, my first ever Finding Nemo Party), I truly missed my calling to be a budget party planner. I have to admit, my daughter’s Moana Party is one of my favorites. Seriously. Just between the Tefiti Birthday Number DIY and the Moana Headband DIY that I’ve posted so far, I’ve been in Disney crafting heaven.

Which leads me back to this post and a Moana Pinata DIY for under $5. With a few household items, a couple of art supplies and some imagination, you can save big on those birthday party piñatas (they’re expensive, y’all!) and make room for more birthday eats and treats.

Ready to make this DIY Kakamora Piñata for your next party? I’m here to lend you an oar. “You’re welcome.”

Easy Moana Pinata DIY

It’s not a birthday party without the piñata games! One of my favorite ways to save money on a kids birthday party is by making my own piñata. It’s such a “HIT!” This Easy Moana Pinata DIY is the perfect budget friendly way idea for your next Disney Moana inspired party.

Ready to make your own Kakamora? Bring out the coconuts with this step by step tutorial (and pics – I got ya covered)!

What You Will Need:

  • 1 Large Cardboard Box
  • 1 Family Sized Cereal Box
  • 1 Metal Hanger
  • 5 Brown Paper Bags
  • Brown Tissue Paper
  • Clear Packing Tape
  • Glue
  • Duct Tape
  • Red Paint
  • White Paint
  • Black Paint

Directions:

  1. Start by grabbing a large circle sized stencil (or in my case an oversize cutting board) and your large cardboard box. Trace and cut out 2 equal sized circles out of the box. Easy pinata tutorial
  2. Cut the side panels off of your cereal box into long strips (depending on box size, about 2.5 – 3 inches wide). DIY kakamora pinata How to make Moana pinata for cheap
  3. Using the outer rim of your circles as a guide, tape your cereal box strips to one cardboard box circle, leaving space for your metal hanger and candy. Insert metal hanger into the center of the circle, tape to secure in the middle of the cereal box strips. Kakamora pinata tutorial
  4. Tape the other cardboard box circle to your piñata. You now should have an “almost” completely enclosed circle shaped piñata. How to make cereal box pinata
  5. Cut out a rectangle from your cereal box, the same width as your side panels, but longer in length, to overlap the sides of your remaining hole. Cut a small slit in the center of your rectangle, to fit over the metal hanger. Birthday pinata tutorial
  6. Wrap your rectangle in duct tape. I recommend multiple layers, as this rectangle will hold the bulk of the weight of your piñata, including all of the weight in candy. Be sure to leave the slit uncovered. Leave open. We will secure later. DIY pinata for less
  7. To keep the overall color of the piñata the same, I then cut and glued brown paper bags to fit and cover the whole piñata. Be sure to also cover the duct tape rectangle flap. Don’t worry about it looking pretty or overlapping. We will fix this later. Allow to dry. Pinata diy Moana party
  8. Now for the brown tissue paper. We are going to need lots of strips. LOTS. Of. Strips. Cut your tissue paper lengthwise, about 1.5 inch width strips. Using scissors, cut small slits about halfway up to create piñata fringe. I highly recommend layering a bunch of strips together and cutting at once to save on time. Moana party pinata diy
  9. Starting at the bottom of your piñata (the end away from the hanger), glue strips onto piñata. Overlap so the fringe is the only part showing. Once all layers are glued and dried, cut off excess fringe from around your piñata. If desired, glue fringe onto the sides too. (I didn’t, but I was short on time!) Kakamora pinata diy
  10. Cut a large circle from a brown paper bag to fit into the center of your piñata (leaving about 4-5 inches) of brown fringe exposed. Paint piñata as shown using your red, white and black paints. Dry. Fill piñata with as desired with candy, toys, etc. Thread rectangle flap onto hanger. Secure with tape and cover with brown paper bag (and piñata fringe if desired).
