Is your family into the Elf on a Shelf? Here’s 5 Reasons Why You Won’t Find An Elf on Our Shelf.
5 Reasons Why You Won’t Find An Elf on Our Shelf
Let me start off this post by saying that I do NOT dislike the elf. I have no problem with people that do love and use the elf. I have plenty of close family and friends that have an elf too. But as with all families, there’s a personal preference. I have been attacked by countless posted pictures of the Elf on the Shelf on all of my social media and of course been asked “Where’s your Elf?” So for all of those folks wondering, here’s 5 reasons why there will never be an Elf on Our Shelf.
1. I have a thing with creepy dolls.
It’s true. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that I hate creepy looking dolls. Those beady eyes that stare at you and you and that sinister smile. Don’t get me started with baby dolls! So I have peered at this little elf and that little face just creeps me out. To think that elf would be staring down at me for the whole month of December….shivers.
2. Ugh, that price tag.
I can’t get myself to pay that astronomical $29.95 for the doll. And no, this is NOT a cry out for you to deliver a doll to my house. Those Elf on the Shelf folks really make you “pay” for that magic. I just can’t do it.
3. That one day I forget…
Knowing my notorious skill for forgetting things, I know there would come a day where I would forget to move the elf. Then what? My poor children would be shattered thinking that they weren’t “good enough” the day before, or some other sad event that would cross their imaginative minds….when really mommy just had a DUH moment. I don’t think I could bear their sad faces and letting them down.
4. Lying about Santa…now an elf?
I am a terrible liar. I have been personally struggling with the lie of Santa. There are days I wish I could just blurt out “He’s NOT real!” And now by adding and elf, I’m adding another layer to the lie. That would lead me to another sad road of heart-broken kids when they find out there’s no Santa AND no elf.
Let’s not even get started to all of the What Ifs. If they touched the elf or some other elf crime…I know I wouldn’t be able to think quick on my feet to add another lie to that.
So with all of the other small lies I have to hide from my kids…I do NOT need an elf too, thank you.
5. The real reason for the season
Most importantly, I want my kids to focus on the real reason for the season. It’s not a magical elf that watches kids’ behavior or a Santa that brings presents, but Jesus who was born on this day. All of the history and stories comes down to a man who had a birthday on this day. I am SO proud that my son knows and tells people why we really celebrate Christmas. That means more to me than the “magic” of this holiday.
Don’t get me wrong. The thought of bribing your children with a month of good behavior is very enticing. I certainly will miss that aspect. But I won’t miss that little Elf on the Shelf. So you will not be photo bombed by me with my elf pictures or hear me talk about where I moved him or share my elf ideas (though I have been giggling at all of yours). We instead will be concentrating on all other wonderful and family-friendly aspects of the holiday together.
So enjoy your creepy elf for me. Maybe one day I can give him a hug 🙂

Thanks for being open and honest. Not everyone is willing to share something that could be offensive (even when not meant to be). I do not do Santa or the Elf and my child is nt traumatized by this (I know because it was true of my own childhood). I also struggle with why the Elf does naughty things when the kids have to be nice.
With all that said, Merry CHRISTmas! May you have a wonderful celebration no matter how you choose to (or choose not to) celebrate!
