5 Steps to Homework Success

If there’s one big transition I’ve noticed from Kindergarten to First Grade….it’s homework. The homework tripled as my boy moved from the baby of the school to the big boy. And getting him to stay on task…not as easy as I thought. If there’s one word to describe his energy level this year….it’s active….very active. So grabbing a few tips from the pros (and a few hairs out of my head), here’s 5 Steps to Homework Success for the active child.

Set the Right Time

Parents, you know your kids best. If they need a few minutes of down time to unwind or whether they focus better jumping right into homework, find a time that works best for THEM. Notice I said them, not you. 🙂 For my son, he does best getting homework done right away while he’s still in “school mode.”

Choose the Right Atmosphere

Does your child work better at the dining room table? In their room? Outside? You may need to experiment, but try out a few different spots around the home to find the right place for them to work in. A mind works better when focused on the task at hand then everything else around them. Which leads to….

Beware of Distractions

Oh, goodness. Are there EVER distractions  in my house these days. An excited toddler desperate for her brother’s attention after 7 hours of separation, a room full of toys, dishes, laundry…you name it, there’s something pulling at my son’s very fleeting attention span.

Check for Hunger

Have you noticed an afternoon hangry in your child? I can tell right away if my son is hungry when he steps off of the school bus. Instant warning lights are flashing, because this mom know hangry all too well. No one wants to attempt homework while hangry. So check to see if your child needs an energy packed afternoon snack before tackling their latest assignment. Trust me. You don’t want hangry and homework together.

Give them a Special Homework Seat

There are some days when I’m asking myself “is this where the phrase ants-in-the-pants comes from?” There are some days when try all he may, my son cannot sit still. Constantly shifting, fidgeting and finding ways to use up the leftover energy from school (Ha! That’s what we call it.) AND still needing to get homework done? We needed a little help in this area. Enter in the One Step Ahead Kids Kore Wobble Chair. We call it the special homework seat. Don’t let the look of this chair deceive you. This seat is genius. The key is in the design.

Chair for active kids

  • Made entirely of hard, durable plastic
  • Easy assembly. Literally snap the seat into the base and you’re ready to go

Kids chair for core

  • Ability to tilt, shift and rock while your child is seated
  • Helps release excess energy while improving concentration
  • Promotes “active sitting” to build back and core muscles
  • Made for ages 4-12 years old and up to 200 lbs.

Ok, so how does this seat work? Check out the video I got of my son while doing his homework. He was able to read his book while getting out extra energy. And notice how amazing his concentration was while reading the hard words? I know, amazing! We were able to finish his book report in no time!

Thanks for the tips. Getting my daughter who is also in the first-grade settle down to do her homework can be a chore some day. Having a “homework station” has helped a lot. She has broke two chairs by rocking them while doing her homework. Maybe this chair would be a great solution.
