Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Johnathan Majors Interview | Kang the Nexus Being
Sitting down for the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania press conference, it’s obvious that we in the presence of Marvel greatness. From talented actors to long-time Marvel storytellers, and the “He Who Remains” legend Kevin Feige himself, I knew we were in for a BIG treat wrapped up in a quantum realm-sized package.
But opening up the multiverse has opened up a plethora of questions from hardcore Marvel comic book fans and MCU fans alike. And while I have some knowledge on Marvel comic book fandom, I’ll admit that my knowledge on nexus beings, Time Keepers and multiverse lingo was basically non-existent.
According to Feige, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was specifically chosen to kick off Phase V of the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the beloved characters. Scott Lang, Cassie, Hope and the van Dyne family all return for this 3rd Ant-Man sequel. And these people have become family to the audience over the past 8 years. Tie in a story about family, vulnerability, and the signature Paul Rudd humor – Ant-Man 3 is the “audience surrogate to introduce Kang.”
But who is Kang? What is a Nexus being? How does Johnathan Majors approach playing probably THE most powerful Marvel super villain of our time? And most importantly, did Kevin Feige just drop the single most important spoiler for Ant-Man 3?

Who is Kang the Conqueror?
Who is Kang? I think that is a question that we will all be answering for a very long time. I think the quick answer to that is Kang is a time-travelling supervillain who is also a nexus being.
There are multiple versions of Kang. These variants occupy different universes, and they have different intentions. They are all different beings, and yet something that I’m still working on and continue to refine and refine and refine to something as a through line between them. And that to me, is the Kang gene.
Kang the Conqueror exists in the quantum realm. And basically, he has issues with the variants (aka our heroes) in this dimension.
What is a Marvel Nexus Being?
In short, Nexus Beings are Marvel characters who are crucial to the stability of the Marvel multiverse. According to Marvel Fandom, “Nexus Beings are rare individual entities with the ability to affect probability and thus the future, thereby altering the flow of the Universal Time Stream. These beings, each referred to as a nexus, act as the keystones of the Multiverse and are crucial to its ultimate coherence and stability.”
A persona of a nexus being exists on each of the parallel Multiverse worlds, acting as a powerful energy anchor for the reality they live in. These nexus beings are then watched by even greater cosmic beings such as the Time Variance Authority and the Time Keepers who notice changes in nexus beings and the Universal Time Stream – and then act accordingly. (Loki and the What-If series on Disney+ are good places to gain more insight on the multiverse and cosmic beings.) Known Marvel Nexus Beings include Kang and Scarlet Witch as seen in the MCU so far.
Who is Kang the Actor?
The prep really comes down to who my director is and who my hero is. Because as an antagonist, we’re following our heroes. In this case, I had to kind of look at and break down Ant-Man.
I look at them and I figure it out, since you can’t antagonize somebody if you don’t know who they are. If you don’t know what’s the opposite of them if you don’t know what their hopes and dreams are, and my objective is to antagonize in order to get what I need to fulfill my dream.
In Loki, I’m dealing with Tom Hiddleston, and it was great. He Who Remains and Tom. This opportunity came to me in lockdown, so I studied Tom Hiddleston for hours a day. And then when that was done, I went, “Okay, Paul Rudd, you’re up.”
I studied [Paul] and all his hero colleagues and co-patriots. Then I speak to the director and producers because there’s a culture to it and I lean toward the culture. I figure that Kang is an everyday man, with lines that He Who Remains says, “I’m just flesh and blood.”
Kang has to relate to his enemies first as a man. He relates to all of them as human beings, then we can go into combat.
What can we expect in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania?
In short, these would be considered spoilers. But if you want a little taste of what’s to come, here’s a few little behind-the-scenes teasers of what audiences can expect in the upcoming Ant-Man 3 sequel. Read with caution.
Quantumania’s through line deals with the family dynamic and family secrets – especially what each person “hasn’t told each other” – and coming to face reality in the quantum realm of all places – where time and space act differently. The relationships between Hope and Janet, Scott and Cassie take center stage as vulnerability and truths are revealed.
Kevin Feige teased “fun and crazy characters” that we meet along the way – and he means more than just heroes.
But I think the single most interesting teaser Feige admitted dates back to the very first opening scene of 2015 Ant-Man. According to Kevin Feige, “Scott can take a punch” is the whole set-up for Ant-Man 3.
