Preparing for the 2nd Grade Gifted Test | TestingMom Review
He failed.
I remember the day so clearly as I sat crammed into a small conference room with my son’s First Grade teacher and the guidance counselor. I had my son tested for gifted while he was in 1st Grade. As a mom with her first “baby” entering the school aged years, I admit that I had no clue what I was doing. My son was light years ahead of his class in Pre-K and Kindergarten. But I had no idea that I had to “request” to have him tested to skip a grade.
So he ended up with bad behavior. Boredom. And perhaps, didn’t get the full attention he needed to excel at a higher aptitude. So here I sat, listening to the 1st Grade teacher explain that he did not pass the gifted test. But that’s not all. He was unprepared. Unfocused. “It was like he wasn’t in the room.” And no one told him how important this test could be for his school career. I didn’t tell him. Then, I heard the silver lining.
All of 2nd grade would be tested for gifted.
We have another chance. The whole 2nd grade class would be tested for gifted this year. This time, I promised that we would be ready. We are preparing for 2nd grade gifted test with TestingMom.com. That’s great! One of the keys to a test reflecting a child’s real abilities is the child being good at actually taking the test. If they don’t have good testing skills they won’t show their best.

This post made me smile, as both my husband and myself were in the GATE program growing up. It is not currently offered at our children’s charter school, but test preparation and study skills are always beneficial.

Wow I wish I’d known about this when my son was younger. He took the gifted test 3 years in a row and 3 years in a row he fell a couple of points shy of being gifted. I’m sure testingmom would’ve gotten him over the hump for sure.
Theresa says
That’s great that they test all kids in the second grade. TestingMom sounds like an amazing resource to help get the kids prepared for the test.
Jan Lee says
Could part of the issue of the “bad behavior” have been from him not seeing the board, ie: needed glasses? That’s what happened to me in third grade. Then I got glasses and was “much improved” in several subjects 🙂 I’m glad they are doing the tests again in second grade 🙂
