Walt Disney Animation Short Films Collection Review
Any Disney fan will tell you, the Disney Shorts are an iconic part of Disney film history. From the 1930s to today, it was Walt’s vision to keep pushing the boundaries of art, creativity and animation. And short films are the perfect opportunity to do so. Today I’m sharing my exclusive Walt Disney Short Films Collection Review and why this is so much more than just a collection of short films.
The newest Disney film release of the year, the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection has arrived and is a perfect addition to your family’s movie legacy.
1. 15 Years of Disney History in 12 Short Films
Have tissues ready. From laughter to tears to the little lump in your throat, Disney has this way of pulling at your heartstrings and emotions, even in small 7-8 minute increments. For the first time ever, this collection of short films from 2000-2015 comes together perfectly in this exclusive Blu-Ray combo pack. Basically, you are going to own 15 years of Disney history. And it couldn’t be more perfect.
Academy Award winning, nominated and praised, this collection of art is some of the BEST shorts I have seen to date. And with classics like The Little Matchgirl to edgy modern pieces like Paperman, and kids’ favorites like Frozen Fever, there’s definitely something for everyone with this collection.

The Ballad of Nessie (2011) – Kevin Deters, Stevie Wermers-Skelton, Dorothy McKim
Tick Tock Tale (2010) – Dean Wellins
Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa (2010) – Kevin Deters, Stevie Wermers-Skelton, Dorothy McKim

2. Exclusive Intros from the Geniuses
Want to sit down and coffee with Disney geniuses? That’s exactly what you get with this collection. The Filmmaker Intros are a perfect cup of coffee before you watch the short. Giving you a richer detail, history and journey through the creative process, it’s a great way to start your shorts adventure.
3. Bonus Features for the Disney Insider
Need even more Disney fun? A Disney movie collection isn’t complete without your bonus features! And here’s two bonuses that are perfect for this collection of shorts.
@DisneyAnimation: A Short Story on Shorts – Continuing a legacy started in the earliest days of the Studio by Walt Disney, the Shorts Program is thriving today at the Animation Studios that bears his name, producing award-winning shorts that tell new stories and experiment with artistic and technical innovations.
This latest chapter in the @DisneyAnimation series gives us an inside look at the process of developing and producing a short. Hosted by actor/comedian T.J. Miller (voice of “Fred,” Big Hero 6), we will meet a few of the artists and filmmakers who make the shorts, and learn why they are such an important part of the fabric of Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Round Table Panelists include Lauren MacMullan (Get A Horse!), Mike Gabriel (Lorenzo), Kristina Reed (Feast, Paperman), Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters (the team behind The Ballad of Nessie, Prep & Landing: Operation Secret Santa, How to Hook Up Your Home Theater).
RUNAWAY BRAIN (1995) – DMA debut – Short film originally released in 2004 as part of the Walt Disney Treasures Collection: Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Vol. 2 DVD set. This short was nominated for an Academy Award® and screened during 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
4. A Perfect Family Collection
Confession, I think we have watched this collection at least once a day since it’s arrived in our laps. The whole collection is so intriguing for both of my kids. And with the rich Disney fingerprint and shorter durations, I can keep the attention span of even my littlest 2 year old without a problem. This collection is PERFECT for travel!
You may want to screen Lorenzo and The Little Matchgirl before showing them to your kids. While both amazing pieces of art, there is a little “cartoon violence” in Lorenzo and the “implied” passing of the little girl (though not overly obvious).
5. Because….Disney
It’s a must have collection for any Disney enthusiast. Rich movie history, progression of films and a deeper look into the production process, I feel like I own a Disney treasure. And so does my family. I know there will be many years of loving and appreciating Disney films, even the “short” ones.
Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection is available on Blu-Ray, Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on Tuesday August 18, 2015. Hope you’ll own a piece of Disney history too.
