5 Summer Reading Tips for Kids | Disney Story Central
I couldn’t be prouder of my boy this year. Kindergarten complete, this kid is reading at a whopping 87 words per minute. Can you tell that my son loves to read? But we all know what happens during the summer break. The dreaded “Brain Dump.” Fight the summer reading slump this year with these 5 summer reading tips for kids. You won’t believe how a little Disney magic does the trick. 🙂
1. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule
If there’s anything that my son understands, it’s routine. We get up. We make our bed. We have breakfast. We get dressed. We read. Everyday, we have a very important time set aside just for reading. Even in the midst of very busy summer schedules (swim class, VBS, family vacations) we always stick to the schedule. And this kid loves routine!
2. Give Them Their Own Reading Space
Make it comfortable, relaxing and most importantly, quiet. Providing my boy a “special spot” to read is definitely more inviting for him. Consider a day outdoors under a tree. For rainy days, build the ultimate blanket fort. Drinks, snacks and even a flashlight complete their reading hideaway for the day.
3. Make It “Cool” to Read
Ok, so maybe your kids don’t use the word “cool” anymore, but you get the point. book club or book party for kids to hang out together and read. Head to your local library and surround your child with kids reading books. A little peer encouragement is sometimes all that’s needed for a day of reading fun!
4. Read Books Featuring Their Favorite Disney Characters

When it comes to my 6 year old’s attention span, I rely heavily on his favorite characters. Any book he picks himself contains friends like Baymax, Mike Wasowski and now Phineas and Ferb. He’s ASKING me to get more Level 3 reading books (like 1st to 3rd grade level, folks!) because they contain stories of characters he knows and loves. Are your kids excited about Pixar’s Inside Out? They already have books at Disney Story Central and my son is dying to read them all!
5. Reward Their Accomplishments
Fostering a lifetime love for reading is definitely worth celebrating! Ice cream, outings and even the new Disney Story Central monthly subscription is rewarding my son for all of his learning accomplishments. Thank you for sharing this. It is so important that our young generation spend time reading. I took my grandchildren to the library to get books. They love this.
