5 Summer Reading Tips for Kids | Disney Story Central
I couldn’t be prouder of my boy this year. Kindergarten complete, this kid is reading at a whopping 87 words per minute. Can you tell that my son loves to read? But we all know what happens during the summer break. The dreaded “Brain Dump.” Fight the summer reading slump this year with these 5 summer reading tips for kids. You won’t believe how a little Disney magic does the trick. 🙂
1. Schedule, Schedule, Schedule
If there’s anything that my son understands, it’s routine. We get up. We make our bed. We have breakfast. We get dressed. We read. Everyday, we have a very important time set aside just for reading. Even in the midst of very busy summer schedules (swim class, VBS, family vacations) we always stick to the schedule. And this kid loves routine!
2. Give Them Their Own Reading Space
Make it comfortable, relaxing and most importantly, quiet. Providing my boy a “special spot” to read is definitely more inviting for him. Consider a day outdoors under a tree. For rainy days, build the ultimate blanket fort. Drinks, snacks and even a flashlight complete their reading hideaway for the day.
3. Make It “Cool” to Read
Ok, so maybe your kids don’t use the word “cool” anymore, but you get the point. book club or book party for kids to hang out together and read. Head to your local library and surround your child with kids reading books. A little peer encouragement is sometimes all that’s needed for a day of reading fun!
4. Read Books Featuring Their Favorite Disney Characters

When it comes to my 6 year old’s attention span, I rely heavily on his favorite characters. Any book he picks himself contains friends like Baymax, Mike Wasowski and now Phineas and Ferb. He’s ASKING me to get more Level 3 reading books (like 1st to 3rd grade level, folks!) because they contain stories of characters he knows and loves. Are your kids excited about Pixar’s Inside Out? They already have books at Disney Story Central and my son is dying to read them all!
5. Reward Their Accomplishments
Fostering a lifetime love for reading is definitely worth celebrating! Ice cream, outings and even the new Disney Story Central monthly subscription is rewarding my son for all of his learning accomplishments. I couldn’t be prouder of his Kindergarten success and now, I’m even more proud of his summer successes! He’s reading, learning and LOVING summer thanks to Disney Story Central!

I had never heard of this before. Thank you so much for sharing. I have three grandsons and a grandchild on the way. My one grandson lives with us part time and he love to have you read to him. He pretends to read to a class and then shows them the book. This would be great for him. He loves books. Thank you again for sharing.

I get books for my grandsons with topics that I know he’s interested in, like cars, dinosaurs, thunderstorms etc. It gets him excited to read!

I’m fortunate that my youngest loves to read no matter what. My teen I have to coerce w/Kindle money to get her to read. Road trips help too. 😉

I like the shady reading spot and a daily set time for books. Good habits last forever and you can’t beat the habit of reading.

Really great advice. It’s so important to keep reading going over the summer and you have some great strategies to make it not feel like work.

Great reading summer tips. Kiddo loves going to the library and picking out books. Her school has a summer reading challenge as well as the local independent bookstore, the library and even Barns and Noble. So we do a few each summer.

We make it part of our routine, too. My boys are enjoying this app.

We are so excited about summer reading. Well, at least I am. My kids probably have the pool on their minds.

I look for books that are specific to each child. One kid loves sports, one loves princesses so there is no one size fits all in our house.

With us, we like to get the summer reading list from the library and tie a goal to it with a prize (usually a trip to the bookstore at the end of the summer and a reading celebration) along with creating a summer reading space for them and making a routine. Kids even the big ones enjoy routine and I still kind of do too, even in the summer. I look forward to adding that app to our summer fun though, I know my children will enjoy it immensely!

Reading is such fun! I loved taking the kidlets to the library and turning them loose!

If you make reading cool and reward them it will make children more prone to read without having to ask them. I used to love reading and was even in some programs where I would get free pizzas if I read a certain amount of books per month. I am bookworm even now as an adult because of it!

Its important us parents and guardians are helping our kids to continue to read over the summer. Rewards are always great ways for kids to push them to learn.

Thanks for the tips, I think it’s a great ideal to have a set time to read daily. When my Grandkids visits in the summer I take them to the library for books and reading time.
