6 Stages of Breakfast When You’re a Mom
One thing I’ve learned since becoming a mom is how “fluid” the term breakfast is. What I once thought was a delectable 5 course meal of delicately cooked eggs, freshly squeezed orange juice and a side of extra crispy bacon suddenly morphed into a world of survival of the fittest when my son was born. Then add my daughter – I may or may not have eaten a few things I am taking with me to the grave. As our lives get busier and busier, I always have breakfast to keep me grounded. Mom always said it was the most important meal of the day – but she didn’t say what the breakfast had to include.
So today I’m having the judgement-free breakfast. Raising my cup of coffee, I’m sharing a little humor with the 5 Stages of Breakfast When You’re a Mom. Have a laugh with me during my recent early morning breakfast hunt, and scroll down for a delicious RaceTrac giveaway.
You Start Healthy
Moms, we always have good intentions. Your mommy pooch is already scolding you with guilt as you turn off your car and lock your door. Your empty belly makes another rumbling sound the moment you walk-in to pick out your breakfast in 2.9 nanoseconds before your next stop on today’s to-do list. So immediately you go to pick up your fruit.
And hard boiled eggs.
You even pat yourself on the back as you pick up a side of yogurt or cottage cheese. “Sensible,” you nod.
But Then The Usual Suspects Call
But then your nose checks-in. The smells of the fresh breakfast sandwiches and pastries call you as you linger just a few minutes in the direction of eggs, sausage and a buttermilk biscuit. You can do an extra workout later, right? You start to feel a little guilty as you grab a doughnut too. “To balance the salty,” you rationalize.
You Then Make the Mistake of Looking at the Roller Grill
Dinner for breakfast? I don’t judge. Making up for last night’s breakfast for dinner (aka another round of cereal), you decide that a Nathan’s Famous 100 percent Premium All Beef Hot Dog, Tamales and Taquitos would make up for your sorely lacking meal. I mean it’s protein. You have to have protein to start your day.
And Then Discover That Candy is Dandy
Panic begins to set in as you realize that you have taken way too long to pick out breakfast. You head towards check-out and see the rows and rows of endless delicious candy. Hello, chocolate. I mean you “mom” hard. You deserve a little reward for your hard work, right?
Ultimately, You Settle on Ice Cream
Reality comes back and your kid tugs on your arm. Uh-oh. Did we forget the cereal at home again? Hands thrown up in the air, you give in to that pitiful little face as he longingly looks at the ice cream machine. RaceTrac always has amazing soft serve. And that toppings bar? Mmm-hmm. How can I deny a tasty cone for under $2? You give your child a fist bump for the family budget win. “Shhh, don’t tell Daddy.”
But Always Balance with Coffee
“Didn’t I come in here for breakfast?” The RaceTrac Crazy Good Coffee bar makes your heart skip a beat as you fill a luxurious cup of coffee. A shot of hazelnut? Yes. Soy milk? Of course. That amazing fresh coffee taste? Always.
You take a sip and the world starts to make sense again. Leaving with coffee in one hand and a child happily licking her ice cream in the other, you sigh. The struggle of motherhood is real. But hey, I don’t judge your breakfast. We need more moms to support those crazy mornings when you’re doing everything you can to juggle schedules and balanced meals. Some days those healthy foods win. Some days it’s ice cream for breakfast. But which of the stages of breakfast you’re in today, there’s something delicious to be grabbed at your local RaceTrac.
