Outer Space really does bring the curiosity out of us. Families from around the world come to visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex every year. And it’s no wonder that it’s one of the biggest attractions for the Florida Space Coast.

But what does KSC have to offer to families? Why should you consider taking your little ones here? I’ve got the details and 7 reasons why KSC needs to be on your family bucket list.

1. It’s “Not a Theme Park”

Central Florida is definitely known for it’s share of tourism, especially when it comes to the theme park department. But The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex proudly holds the unofficial title of the theme park that’s not a theme park. You take in a real part of U.S. history and experience an attraction unlike any other in the world. The vision of KSC is real, shown honesty, simply and in it’s true form.

There’s not a lots of flash, glitz or glamour here, and I think it’s definitely one of the biggest draws of families from all around the country, and even the world. And it’s the only place in the U.S. to see where actual space shuttles and rockets launch into the skies and make history, and is still operational today.

2. The NASA Dream in You

Haven’t we all had a childhood dream of being an astronaut? The thought has definitely crossed my mind a few times. Once you step through the Kennedy Space Center gates, that giddy child in me bursts wide open. The awe of seeing real NASA rockets, equipment and even rocks from outer space, the dream becomes a reality.

Space travel, exploration and the imagination of children and adults, it’s what keeps families coming back year after year. There’s so much to see and take in at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, that families really enjoy their experience to the fullest.

3. Rocket Garden

Definitely one of my favorite sections of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Standing in the midst of greatness, being able to touch a piece of NASA history, gazing up into the skies as you can really envision how massive these rockets had to be to lift off into space. Definitely take pictures, it’s one of my favorite spots in all of Central Florida.

4. Space Shuttle Atlantis

Seriously, this is my #1 reason why EVERYONE needs to visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex at least once. Put this on your bucket lists, folks because the scenery is breathtaking. The Space Shuttle Atlantis Complex is a flawless presentation of one of the historic missions to space. Outside, you are standing in awe of the replica external tank and rocket boosters. Inside, a fantastic short movie preview.

But then in amazement, the screen lifts up, and there it sits. The Space Shuttle Atlantis tilted so you can see every detail inside and out. Don’t forget to walk behind and see the under belly of the shuttle too. There were tears in my eyes.

5. A Simulation Launch that Rivals the Real Thing

No, it’s not Disney’s Mission to Mars. You won’t feel the crazy G-Forces and probably will not lose your lunch. But the Shuttle Launch Experience at KSC rivals the real thing, according to the astronauts that have sat in your seats. It’s definitely thrilling, and you will feel your whole body shake during the simulation. And for those 5 minutes inside the simulation shuttle, it’s definitely an experience not to miss.

6. Lunch with an Astronaut

Want to eat a delicious lunch AND get to chat with a real life astronaut? KSC offers a unique experience for families to dine in comfort and company. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet style lunch (the Tang is such a funny pun drink offering), with pizza even for the kids.

Then sit round table style and ask your burning questions to one of the astronauts that have “been there, done that.” Kids just love getting their adorable questions out, including the crowd favorite “How do you go to the bathroom in space?”

7. Family Connection

I think one of the post importance pieces of a family KSC visit is how much interaction and connection you feel with your family. Parents sharing their memories of the NASA Space Program with their kids, answering questions, and just getting into the real part of U.S. history without the fluff. It’s fun to see the real excitement on kids’ faces when they see and experience KSC for what it is, not just for rides. It’s no wonder that local families get annual passes to visit throughout the year. The family connection and experience at KSC is unlike any other.

My family just loves visiting the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It’s such a treasure to have this place as one of the major highlights of the Florida Space Coast, if not the world. So grab your family and put the KSC Visitor Complex on your next family vacation (or in my case staycation). You won’t regret the experience.
