Michael Rooker Interview | Yondu’s Role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2
It’s not everyday that someone comes to an interview with a pair of teeth in their hands. But you could tell that Michael Rooker was as giddy as school boy to show us a rare insider look at Yondu Udonta…up close and personal.
A sweet southern drawl. A gentleman’s smile. An inquisitive look towards the 13 “mom bloggers” that sat before him. Oh, and that’s besides the fact that his skin was completely blue, he sported some gnarly teeth and a gigantic shark fin sprouted from the top of his head, I would say that Michael Rooker was the epitome of a fun interview.
We sat down for a rare Michael Rooker Interview to talk everything Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – What’s with the new fin? Will we learn more about Yondu’s back story? How is Yondu imperative to the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel? And did he hint at a Ravagers revolt?
For a moment, you almost forget that he’s in full Yondu costume sitting before us. Michael Rooker definitely took advantage of using his charm with 13 ladies in the room. Quickly turning any probing question into an interview question about us – he was suave in redirecting the conversation. But that’s not to say that 13 very lovely bloggers weren’t able to squeeze a bit of info out of this blue dude. Why is Yondu an important part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?
Did you get a “Fin” cut?
There’s a new addition to Yondu’s look. Yondu’s headgear, aka a super large fin on top of his head, has grown since the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie – as a small nod to the comic books. And according to Rooker, the larger fin is a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 storyline. While details couldn’t be spilled on penalty of death (or because a blue man wasn’t giving it up), he did reveal a couple of details about Yondu’s new accessory for this movie.
The fin’s not heavy. It’s hollow.
He was also surprised they didn’t put lights and special effects into the fin. But you never know.
If they’re going to do that kind of stuff, they’ll do it in post-production.
Expanding Yondu’s Back Story
Is he a hero or a villain? With our first intro of Yondu during the first Guardians movie, we don’t get into depth with Yondu’s history. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the opportunity to touch on all of those complicated relationships in greater detail. At least, that’s what Michael Rooker kind of says.
It’s a continuation of Yondu in the first script. We get to learn a bit more about Yondu. His relationship with Quill…more odd things that I get to do. Some silly things. It’s not all silly, but it’s fun. It’s A LOT of fun.
A Ravagers Revolt?
Speaking of relationships, Yondu’s relationship with his crew seems to take a turn in Guardians Vol. 2. With hints about a possible crew revolt and Yondu joining sides with Peter Quill, Michael Rooker was “obviously” not spilling the beans on our crew revolt question. He did however, let us in on this:
My crew is a very violent and aggressive crew. They always look for a weakness. They’re always trying to challenge me. There is loyalty going on, but also rivalry.
Stunts
The Guardians of the Galaxy aren’t the only ones getting in on the action. Yondu is doing more stunts in Vol. 2, according to Michael Rooker. Though he definitely plays it off cool.
There’s some wire stuff going on, you know, but it’s pretty safe. We got these harnesses and the cables, they hold thousands of pounds, so and I’m not that heavy. But we’re not doing any real stunt. I don’t consider it stunts, you know. It’s just part of the action that we’re going to be doing.

What does Michael Rooker think of his returning character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? All he had to do was insert his Yondu teeth.
That is some good looking man there.
Obviously.

well, that fin has definitely gotten bigger. But it is a pretty ‘distinctive’ look, lol.
