K’nex Plants Vs Zombies Plank Walk Set Review

My son is at the perfect age. He’s really gotten into building toys and how things work, which is why I love that we are able to work with K’nex for the holiday season!

The new K’nex Plants Vs Zombies Plank Walk Set is toy set that allows your child’s favorite video game to come to life. Building, playing and defeating zombies becomes clever and interactive with this new set, already on the hot toy list for the 2014 holiday season. So what do K’nex and zombies have in common?

Knex building set

The answer, FUN! K’nex really gets into the concept of the Plants vs. Zombies game. Making your very own real life scenario game with enhanced pieces, stickers, and of course, plenty of connectable K’nex pieces, we dove into the set to see why this would be a hot holiday toy for the season.

The Plants Vs Zombies Plank Walk Set Includes:

  • 319 piece set for ages 7 years+
  • 4 Zombies: 2 Pirate Zombie figures, 1 Pirate Conehead Zombie figure and 1 Pirate Captain Zombie figure
  • 2 Plant Launchers: 1 Coconut Cannon and 1 Cabbage-pult with coconut and cabbage ammo
  • K’nex motor for “rumble grid” action (2 AA batteries needed)

Daddy and son spent a little over an hour putting the set together. Like building your very own board game, K’nex provides all of the pieces and instructions needed The zombies and plant pieces had great features too, even turned “in” feet. When fully built this replica of the Pirate Seas level in Plants vs. Zombies set creates a “real life” video game scenario.

The zombies can be hurled via the K’nex pendulum swing or can be “shimmied” down the sloped board towards the plant launchers via the K’nex motor. The plant launchers then use their ammo to take out the zombies before reaching the end of the board.

Pros: The design and concept are really neat. There are intricate details on each Plants vs. Zombies piece and K’nex really weaves in their own constructions pieces well. My son instantly got the idea of the game and you can see how much the folks at K’Nex enjoyed coming up with the idea of the rumble board. I like that the set really gets kids involved with the engineering, physics and construction, as well as creativity and patience.

Cons: The instructions were definitely tricky to grasp at first and a few trial and error steps were taken. The zombies had trouble “standing” up on the building bricks that they were to “rumble” down the grid board. We ended up having them sit down on the bricks instead. Definitely keep an eye on those little pieces too. The plant launchers can definitely “launch” those green and brown ammo balls far, and I wouldn’t want to be in the line of fire. And of course, keep those pieces way from little ones as well.

My 6 year old son really enjoyed building the set with his dad (quality father/son time). And he definitely has played with the set multiple times since construction. If your child is a HUGE Plants vs. Zombies fan, I can definitely see why they would love this set. Combining multiple fun concepts for kids, the new K’Nex Plants Vs Zombies Plank Walk Set will definitely be a hot toy this season.

My husband and our youngest son would love this. They already have a blast playing the digital game together. I’ll have to check this out next time we’re at the store.

We haven’t gotten into Knex sets here yet. We still have a baby, and I worry about the smaller pieces. Once he’s older, I plan to introduce them to the boys though! I’ve never seen them in person either – just at the toy store, so I’m excited to play with them one day too.

I see Christmas gifts for my nephew in the future! Thanks for sharing, I so don’t have a pulse on kids toys.
