Heelys Review | Safe for Kids?

Kids everywhere are moving and moving faster! Heelys has reinvented the way kids get around. Why walk when you can glide? That’s right, Heelys are the original shoes with removable wheels in the heels.

I received the Inferno Heelys for my awesome 8 year old nephew! The HUGE smile across his face was worth the shoes alone. He had been asking his parents for a pair for years, since “ALL” kids have to have them! I instantly earned the “Coolest Aunt Ever” Award, a pretty big deal coming from an 8 year old 🙂

Are Heelys safe for kids?

As a sneaker, the Heelys were pretty :ahem: fly! They are very durable and made of high quality material, as to be expected from a shoe that is bound to see a few bumps. I was surprised when I pulled the shoes out of the box. Where were the wheels? They weren’t even attached to the shoes! I had no idea that the Heelys wheels were removable. The Heel Plugs that were inserted inside are easily removed with the included removal tool.

As a parent, I loved that Heelys gives the option for 2 different types of shoes. Without the wheels, the shoe is still pretty awesome to wear! The no-wheels option was short lived as my nephew quickly inserted the wheels and we headed outside for a “test drive.”

Seems easy at first, but mastering Heelys definitely takes a few tries! At least braking is simple; you just push forward towards your toes.

The key to “gliding” is having your strong foot out front as you gently lean back on your heels. As you become more advanced, you can easily turn, weave, and maneuver. You can check out the Skate 101 videos to help you get started.

Getting around becomes a FUN challenge for kids while practicing balance, coordination and a dab of creativity too!

There’s a 2-wheel option (HX2 series) that offers a little more stability if you’re worried about balance issues. I recommend this shoe for younger kids. You can purchase Heelys for kids and adults online or at a local store near you.

Be sure to follow Heelys via facebook, twitter, and check out all of the fun videos on YouTube.

Disclosure ~ I received a free product in exchange for this Heelys review. No other compensation was received. Though the product was free, the opinions are 100% my own!
