Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Kurt Russell Talks About His EGO in Exclusive On-Set Interview #GotGVol2
He’s tall, masculine, hair swept back, in-costume and covered in hundreds of little white UV dots on his face. I can almost see his cowboy swagger walk heading towards us as he stood in the middle of a giant warehouse, completely covered in blue screen. This is Kurt Russell.
But let’s not get distracted.
This guy doesn’t have an ego. He just plays one. In this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Kurt Russell interview, we talk about his upcoming role as Ego, The Living Planet, get a look at the first released pictures and why Star-Lord may not only be the music junkie in the family.
While Kurt Russell wasn’t giving up too many secrets about his role as Star-Lord’s dad, just his look revealed a lot. In a Star Trek meets Peter Pan costume colored tan with a hint of red fabric peeking through, he stood with an empty holster at his leg. Must be a blaster scene coming up in the new movie. The UV dots definitely helped too – CGI face – perhaps some backstory? The interview was already getting good, and he hasn’t opened his mouth yet.
Getting the Role
He laughed “Well, I guess you would say 55 years’ worth.” No audition. No call back. With his long resume, it’s not too surprising. But that’s not to say he didn’t do his research for the role. Prior to a few months ago, he didn’t know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy. He had some homework.
I was doing a publicity trip for ‘Hateful Eight’ and suddenly one day all the reporters I ran into were saying ‘Are you gonna do Guardians of the Galaxy? Are you gonna be Peter Quill’s father?’ I never had been asked about a character before I’d done as much as that. I’d never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy. I suddenly realized that this movie must have been very popular and the audience cared about who his father was gonna be. So I read the script. And [then] I said I need to see the movie.
So he watched the movie with “Goldie,” (yes, we all let out a little AW when he said that) and a few months later here he was, covered in dots and performing wire gags alongside Chris Pratt. Pretty sweet.
Not the Only Music Fan
Like son, like father? Star-Lord isn’t the only music fan in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Kurt Russell admits that his character will have have a strong connection to the songs as well.
It will be quite important. There’s a strong connection to music, particular songs. It’s a big part of this world and [Ego] continues that theme very, very strongly.
Behind the Stunt Work
After 55 years as an actor, it’s kind of odd to see the Kurt Russell in the middle of a giant blue screen room. He admits that he wasn’t completely comfortable either. What’s it like playing EGO in the middle of nothingness? It’s harder than it looks.
It’s funny. This will look obviously completely different. And it’s difficult too. I’ve always been an actor like many actors who respond to their surroundings. When we did ‘Tombstone’ there was a scene where I was walking with Dana Delany. The wind was blowing, so it was blowing some of the cotton woods around. One was gonna blow on her face so I just picked it, and it was part of the scene. It was very organic.
In a movie like this, it’s so chalk full of things that don’t exist, but it’s fun to imagine. Chris and I did some stuff when we first got together. He knows that he’s my son and that I’m his father and I know that he’s my son. We’re doing this really cool thing and there’s nothing there. Only he and I were knowing what was happening. It’ll be fun to see that brought to life.
What We Should Expect from Star-Lord’s Dad
And it yet a deeper, more meaningful ending to this interview, Kurt Russell revealed what he’s hoping that audiences will get out of his new role, Ego The Living Planet. I could have sworn he grabbed his holster just like Wyatt Earp when he said this.
I hope to have all the entertainment value that you should get in movie like this but underneath is the reality aspect – the relationship that is important to that person. That’s real, that has consequence, that’s not comic book, that’s not cartoon. So that’s one of the reasons James Gunn wants to get Kurt Russell to play the part because I’m gonna go in there and do that.
