Chris Pratt Interview | Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Star-Lord, I Am Your Father
“I just touched his underwear. I just touched his underwear…”
After literally touching Star-Lord’s undergarments in the costume trailer, here he was, all dressed in leather pants and looking – well, yeah. It’s Chris Pratt dressed AS Star-Lord. And it literally took all of my mom powers to calm myself and focus for this interview. Deep breath, ladies.
This Chris Pratt interview is HOT, spicy, sweet and all 100% Chris Pratt. It’s the spoiler YOU want right now, some rare facts about working with Kurt Russell, and life as a super hero and a super dad.
Saving The Best for Last
Chris Pratt was currently filming his last of 3 movies. And while you think this guy should be completely DONE and exhausted with the process, he couldn’t have been more energetic about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
This movie is coming at the end of a long run of jobs that I’ve had. This is the third one. I will have been on the road for 13 – 14 months by the time this is over. It feels like the perfect movie to have as the third movie. I don’t want to compare them, they’re all different, and I love them all. But James is so good. He knows exactly what he wants. We all know the characters. Everyone’s gotten better since the last movie. I’d say we’d really had to pick up right where we left off.
And it felt like everyone’s on their A-game and days are totally manageable. The story is spread out enough to where I have days off which is really nice. I’ve been able to actually get home to LA and Anna and Jack will be able to come out and visit me. And it’s like getting a nice warm up for the reentry period for when I go back home.
Not THAT Kind of Sequel
Worried that Guardians 2 is just a rehash of Guardians 1? Chris Pratt is here to calm your fears.
When I was first introduced to the story, it was with James. We were sitting in his living room, and he was like, “Okay, here’s the story.” He told me exactly what was going to happen. And that was before the script had been written. When he told [me], I was captivated. I’m so moved and impressed by this story. It’s completely different from the first movie, but similar in that it’s really going to surprise people. It’s not going to be one of these sequels that’s just a rehash of what they did in the first movie. It’s taking a big leap forward.
The Awesome Mix Just Got Awesome-r
Chris Pratt admits to having a love-hate relationship with the original Awesome Mix. (See my first interview with Chris Pratt.) But Awesome Mix 2? It just got more awesome.
I don’t want to give away the spoiler, but there is a second tape. And just like in the first movie, it absolutely belongs in the movie. You know sometimes how they put songs in movies, just because, “Hey, this would be really cool song to accompany this scene?” That’s fine. But with James the way he’s done it, he’s always allowed the take to be a narrative tool: to get you in the mood, to get you pumped up and heighten the excitement of the scene or emotion of the scene. But also, he justifies it because it’s a prop in the movie; it didn’t just come out of nowhere.
It’s the same thing with volume two because Quill gets it at the end of the first movie. I’m telling you, his mom had even better taste and probably a little bit more money in volume two. So the songs are expertly used without being distracting. Once you see the movie, you’ll understand more of what I mean. It is used even more as a narrative tool than the first one.
A Day On Set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Imagining Chris Pratt dangling on wires in 3, 2, 1…
Yeah, it’s really fun, man. It’s some work, but mostly it goes in order of quantity. It goes from waiting around and being kind of bored, to looking around and having a ton of fun and being really excited, to having to do to some hard work that you want to end soon. Mostly it’s waiting around, but there are a great amount of surreal moments. Like I was spinning in circles yesterday opposite Kurt Russell on wires, and we’re flying through the air. We’re doing these stunts; we’re just like being superheroes, which makes it super awesome. And them I’m looking at him, and he’s looking at me, and even he’s having a ball. And I was like, “This is cool.”
And so the work part is really fun, but truly the best part is just getting to know people, because that time when you’re sitting around being bored you actually just start getting to know people. You spend 10, 12, 13 hours with somebody. I’m talking to Kurt about his life growing up, and what it was like for him and Goldie Hawn and their relationship. And so we just get to talk about our life.
Working with Kurt Russell
Working alongside Kurt Russell for hours at a time, Chris Pratt really took advantage of getting to know a movie legend. So what was it really like to work with Kurt Russell? And wait, did Chris Pratt ask Kurt Russell to be his dad?
Man, it’s been awesome. Not every actor who has been around as long as he’s been around is a joy to work with. Kurt Russell is so great. I mean, he’s really tough. A lot of people don’t know everything about Kurt Russell. He was a professional baseball player. He broke a World Record as a racecar driver as a teenager. He was a pilot for like 25 years. He actually flew delivering packages. He has horses and breeds them. He’s such a man. He’s like so good. I asked him if he would be my real dad. No offense to my father. Rest in peace Dad, but you’ve been replaced by Kurt Russell.
Balancing Super Hero and Super Dad
And how is Chris Pratt’s life as a dad? Awesome. The best is when Jack comes to visit him at the set. Oh the stories this dad can tell about his son…
It’s all about perspective. [Jack] doesn’t have really a world where he’s lived in where his mom and dad weren’t on TV. That’s just a natural thing for him, to see Anna on her show or if an old movie is on. That’s life for him. So he comes to set and mostly he’s excited to see me, but I think he loves that there are new people for him to meet and show off. It’s the people, it’s like seeing me is the best thing for him on set. And for me too when he’s here.
But the other day, and this is true and kind of embarrassing, he was behind the monitor with a ComTech on, watching the monitor, and he just turns around and he goes, “Can I get a coconut water?” And I was like, “Whoa, okay. Somebody needs to go sweep something up or he’s getting a little too comfortable.” Like, to no one in particular, “Can I get a coconut water?” Like who are you talking to first of all?
Ladies, The Spoiler You Want
Not like you need motivation to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2., I mean Chris Pratt alone is enough to make me want to show up. But in case you were wondering, Chris Pratt did reveal that there is a shirtless scene for Guardians 2. I repeat, a Chris Pratt with no shirt in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Holy goodness! And with the new extended TV spot from the big game, you’re going to want to pause and replay a few times.
Ok, ok. I admit; it was little too much fun being in the same room as Chris Pratt. But in all seriousness, you can tell that this actor loves everything about this movie. It’s not just a sequel. It’s not just a Marvel movie. It’s been an unforgettable experience.
You just never know who you’re going to work with. The work part will be good, and the movie hopefully will be good. But the experience, the journey, you hope that will be everything that you want it to be. On this one, it really has been.
