5 Best Home Furniture Shopping Tips on a Budget
I remember the day that my husband and I bought our first couches together. Young, in love and pre-kids, we chose a pair of practical couches that we knew would last a few years. Now at 11 years old, these couches have lasted through many memories – baby feedings, family movie nights, story readings, and oh the snuggles. Staring at our two couches today, it’s hard to let go of furniture that means so much. The lumps, the bumps, the stains, the crumbs. And most recently – my toddler had an episode with glitter glue.
Now, (in my best Lion King voice), “it is time.” Time to make some new family memories with some new couches. So where do I even start as a busy mom? Today I’m sharing my 5 Best Home Furniture Shopping Tips on a Budget – because let’s face it folks, I am and always will be a practical mom looking for the best discount furniture.
Do Your Research
Furniture shopping for me starts even before I pack up my family in the car. Online. I check out popular sites. I compare prices. I look for shapes, fabrics, designs, sales – basically getting my hands on everything I possibly can to find out what has changed in the couches in the last 11 years. Have an idea of what you’re looking for so when you step a foot into a store, you don’t feel overwhelming lost (been there, done that).
Bring Your Tools
Time to go shopping, with tape measure in hand. This is going to be your best friend and most useful tool. Measure your existing couches. Measure your space. Then take those measurements and bring them with you to the store. Any couch that you love, measure it. See if it will physically fit in your home. My biggest shopping blunder? Forgetting about my existing home décor. Bring a swatch, a paint chip, or in the very least some pictures of your home to give you an idea if the furniture will fit in.
Test It Out
You are investing years into your furniture. The least you can do is have a seat. Don’t be afraid to touch, sit, lay, and even “try out” the furniture in your home. Being that this was the first time I was shopping for couches in years, I headed to my local CORT Clearance Center. Known for high quality furniture that’s affordable (but not cheap), I felt right at home shopping for new couches. Weaving our stroller in and out of living room sets, my toddler and I had a relaxed and very non-stressful shopping experience. We even found a few couches that I think would be perfect in our home!
Get the Best Price
Once a saver, always a saver. I’m always searching for the best price on retail. Thankfully, CORT Clearance Centers think like I do. Not only does CORT Clearance Centers offer low prices on high quality furniture pieces, but I can save even more by purchasing sets or “home to go” packages. By comparing, bundling and saving – I can get the best possible family-budget price on couches that I love. And with every piece being CORT Certified, CORT guarantees that if any product is found to be defective within 90 days of purchase it will repair or replace it. That’s perfect for my family!
Does It Feel Like Home?
Does it feel like home? This is the key question I would ask myself with every couch we looked at. Can I imagine another 11 years of priceless family memories on these couches (sans glitter glue)? More than the design, the fabric, and yes, even the price, I need to know that these essential pieces of home furniture are going to be a part of our home and part of our family.
Are you ready to upgrade your family furniture? Find your local clearance center to grab high quality discount furniture at a price your family budget will appreciate. Hope that you’ve found tidbits of home furniture shopping tips for your next big purchase. We’re ready to take on our couches. Now to talk to the husband about that entertainment center.

I love these tips. You can’t just go in grab whatever strikes your fancy. I mean, that’s the goal, sure, but you have to make sure it fits and that it’s comfortable.

These are great tips. It can be easy to just buy things on a whim but I think it is so much smarter to use the tips above when shopping for home furniture, especially if you are on a budget.

I am all for trying them out and seeing them in person!! Also make sure it will fit in your doorways!!! Hubby is great at putting things together so we benefit from buying cheaper items we put together ourselves! We also try to find places that price match and we shop around!

We just got new furniture about 6 months ago, but like you ours were around a long time. We had them about 9 years when we bought our first home and before kids. We also searched and chose the best bargain in town.

The easy recliners are due for an upgrade. I’m thinking of a sofa with a recliner at each end. The suggestion for checking prices and product info online before heading to the furniture store is certainly worth its weight in gold. Now you’ve inspired me to quit thinking and start doing.
