Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good #VeryBadDay Movie Review | Anything But Terrible
So I have a confession when it comes to watching movies. I actually HATE when everything goes wrong for the whole movie. It makes me sad, mad, upset and well…sets me in a bad mood. But then I watched Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Movie. And in pure Disney fashion, I found myself not only enjoying but laughing along to this clever twist on a classic book.
The last bit of of my Disney L.A. journey, it’s fitting that I am ending with a movie review of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Because what did this movie make me think of? How much I love and missed my family. I’ve got 4 reasons why this fall’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Movie is anything BUT terrible.
1. A Different Kind of Comedy
So built upon a movie where everything goes wrong for a family, this movie made me laugh and laugh hard. But I found the humor NOT in a laugh AT the characters and the stuff they were going through, but more a sympathetic laughter. I felt for this family and what they were going through. And you find yourself laughing because you actually want to see them “make it through.” There were so many really hilarious moments, it’s really hard to pick just one. The Peter Pan musical opening day was amazing, as well as Steve’s scene in the Hibachi Grill.
2. Loveable Cast of Characters
Jennifer Garner and Steve Carrell were perfect parents for this movie. I worried about Steve being a little too much in-your-face comedy for this movie, but I really enjoyed this pair of parents. Heck, they were “cool” in my opinion. I even found the kids very likeable and not over-reaching or whiny. I would take Alexander home with me in a heartbeat (as long as he didn’t try to burn down the school…).
3. Something for the Whole Family
You worry in these kinds of “everything go wrong” movies that it will have a negative effect on your family, especially your little ones. I found that the good triumphing over the bad actually comforting. These series of events bring the family closer together. Love triumphing over all of the bad girlfriends, ugly outfits, head colds, and your car basically falling apart. And it’s amazing to watch the family come together, realize how much they need and love each other through the good and the bad that sends a positive message to every family. There’s something for the kids and even some subtle humor for the adults. And with the soft PG rating, I feel “good” (like the pun?) in taking my 6 year old son to watch this one.
4. A Happy Ending
It’s not Disney style without a happy ending. And yes, there definitely is one here. You might even get a glisten of a tear and choked up feeling inside (Disney is always good for this!). But mostly, this movie had me thinking about my family and how much I love them. That we can stick it out through anything BAD tat comes our way, because the bond of family is stronger and tougher than any terrible events the world can throw at us. Good job Disney, in yet another installment of amazing family awesomeness for the feel GOOD movie event of fall 2014. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Movie is one that I will be taking my family to see again (and again).

thanks for the write up. I had this movie recommended to me after having a very bad day, where I ended up crying in public, in a country where people don’t show those types of emotions. We have yet to see it, but I think our girls would enjoy it too

I love Steve Carrell in anything! When I first saw the preview I thought it was going to be one of those adult-child switcheroo films, but it looks like the whole family is included in the exploits!

I don’t know but I don’t like watching “comedy” movies. I don’t seem to get the jokes and comical lines most of the time. But a happy ending is one that strikes me best with this movie.
