Disney Frozen Movie Review | Safe for Kids?
Disney Frozen was a movie experience unlike any other.
I was in complete shock just from the fact that my 5 year old son kept his 3D glasses on his face the ENTIRE movie. I know, amazing feat right?
Well, that just tells you how fantastic Frozen is going to be for you and your family. I’m so excited to share my family’s experience with you, and why this movie is going to be one of the BEST of the year! But what about that PG rating? In this Disney Frozen Movie Review | Safe for Kids, I’m breaking down the visuals, the story (no spoilers!), and everything about that PG age rating for children. Should your youngest kids be ok watching this icy movie? Or is it too cold for their eyes?
The Visuals
The graphics are astounding, in true Disney animated movie style. Even the snowflakes have distinct attention to detail. You have to see the movie in 3D. The visual effects are like a gourmet buffet for your eyes.
The Story
Frozen has all of the workings of the “old-school” Disney Princess movies. There’s a full musical sing-along worthy score, which was impressive just on it’s own. I sorely missed the classic Disney music. Every song is memorable, catchy, and sung to Disney perfection. Even a few days later, I catch myself humming the new “Let It Go” song.
The enchanting story is based on the classic tale The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson. There’s not one but two princesses in this movie to add to your Disney princess collection. Sisters Elsa and Anna have very different personalities, and will definitely win the hearts of your children (ok, me too).
There’s action, adventure, magical powers, true love, an all-star cast, and even a humorous loveable snowman named Olaf. I definitely do NOT want to spoil the ending. While Disney predictable, there’s a twist that will have your eyes misting and leave an eternal lump in your throat. Disney always gets me with a happy tear jerker!
That PG Rating
Is Disney Frozen Movie ok for children? What about kid-friendly? Is the age rating ice cold and have wiggle room for some thawing? Disney Frozen is rated PG for “mild action and rude humor.” Uh-oh. Should parents be concerned?
Language. Thankfully the Disney Princesses keep their class. No swear words from anyone in this animated film! Yay for parents!
Violence. The action in this film is mild overall. However, there is a brief scene with a monster that may be terrifying, as well as a chase scene that is a little suspenseful. Again, focusing on the animated part of the film, this is very reminiscent of violence equal to other princess films like Tangled, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan.
Adult themes. The Disney Princess theme continues. The movie touches upon the deaths of parents, and the near death of a main character – twice. And if that wasn’t enough, there are also some weapons used (crossbows and guns fired and a sword aimed for killing).
While female empowerment seems to go through a roller coaster of importance, in the end, your kids will feel satisfied. There is emphasis on a “sexy” outfit worn by one character. Some parents may feel concerned.
As far as the “rude humor,” it’s very mild indeed. Your kids would need a very discerning ear, hyper focus and a very inquisitive mind to fully understand the “jokes for the adults.” But this is even underwhelming compared to the humor of Shrek.
What Frozen movie age rating is recommended?
With a runtime of 102 minutes (1 hour 42 minutes), Disney Animation hits the sweet spot for kids and families. With visually appealing animation, catchy tunes, humor, and relatable characters – Disney triumphs once again, this time with twice the amount of princess power.

Disney’s newest Frozen animated movie is most comparable to the other Disney Princess movies such as Aladdin, Mulan or even The Princess and the Frog. It’s right in Disney Animation’s wheelhouse, but double the princesses.
Based on my Disney Frozen parents guide, PG rating breakdown and mom review above, this parent movie reviewer would not recommend Disney’s Frozen animated film to kids younger than the age of 4-5 years old.

As a mom of small children, my 5-year old son really enjoyed this movie. I did not find him clutching for my arm, sitting in my lap nor having nightmares for days after. In fact, I found him fully into the movie with the catchy songs, flowing story and enough humor and action to keep his attention span. I would highly suggest at least a Frozen age rating of 4-years old for a mature child. But definitely by 5-years old.
The Overall
And if all of that wasn’t enough, I got to take home my daughter’s first movie experience, which I am now proud to say was Frozen. It’s a movie memory that will last a lifetime, and it could NOT have been a better first movie for her. I definitely foresee her begging me for Elsa and Anna princess costumes in the near future. My son could not stop talking about Olaf the snowman! His laughter was contagious every time Olaf had a great line.
Frozen will warm your heart this holiday season. A MUST see for every family and MUST have for every Disney movie collection.

I saw this in a preview the other day on TV and I thought that this would be such a great movie to take kids to see. The story line looked perfect and it comes out just in time for winter. This is such a great review. Thanks for sharing
