5 Tips for the Best Toddler Holiday Photos
It’s never too early to start thinking about holiday photos, especially if your toddler has anything to say about it. I can feel the pressure of the holidays pushing into the back of my skull! And with mid October already here, I’m already pushing my husband to get ours done and sent out (always the optimist!). Because before we blink, December will be here and guess who will be scrambling to get cards and gifts ordered, addressed, stamped, mailed….I can feel the grey hairs forming. But getting the perfect pictures of my toddler?
That’s a horse of a different color.
It’s not easy to wrangle a toddler for adorable holiday pictures. But with quite a few years of experience under the belt, I’m spilling the secrets. Take the Best Toddler Holiday Photos with these tips, plus how I found the Best Deals on Kids Clothes!
I’m obsessed with holiday photos. They are one of the few family traditions that I insist on – because I love sending out holiday cards, gifts and everything with my 2 kids’ faces on them.
So you can imagine my huge disappointment when we didn’t get holiday photos done last year. Tears, guys. Tears. Determined to get a leg up on the situation, I’ve gotten started on holiday photos with my littlest. Avoid the tears and get the best toddler holiday photos now.
Feel Out the Mood
Fed? Napped? Stars and moon aligned? You know your toddler’s “best” moods of the day. Work with them. If your child is a happy morning kid, take your pictures in the morning. If you child hits their cranky bewitching hour around 5-6 pm (like mine does), then avoid that time at all costs! Have a plan and a backup plan in case of a toddler meltdown.
Choose Interesting Holiday Props
Kids love to be entertained. Period. I love to include some festive props in my photo shoots when appropriate. It gives your child something to do (besides just stand there) plus also serves as adorable extras for your holiday photos. Think about adding a soft plush love-y, a wrapped gift, or anything else that would be safe for your child to play with during your shoot. And be sure to think about how these props would look in the setting your choose as well.
Be Camera Ready
I’m talking to you, parents! Toddlers have no patience when it comes to waiting – especially when it comes to pictures. Whether you’re taking the pictures yourself or hiring a professional, be sure that YOU are camera ready before your toddler ever enters the scene. Lighting, camera settings (set on super quick shutter speed), snacks, drinks – be prepared! Make sure you have everything set up and ready to go so that when your toddler enters the scene, you can get right to work!
Go with the Flow
Ever tried posing a toddler? Yeah – not recommended.
The key to getting those perfection moments is to go with the flow. Do what makes your toddler feel comfortable in front of the camera. Whether it’s laughing at your silly antics, playing with the props, or dancing to some groovy music, let your child’s true personality shine! Then just capture the moments as you go. You may not get that award winning smile or the perfect angle, but you’ll get something much more meaningful – your toddler expressing themselves!
